About Giarratana Living Nativity

In the heart of the Iblei Mountains, the Giarratana Living Nativity transforms the ancient U Cuozzu district into an open-air museum every year. Amidst the village's stone houses, over a hundred performers bring to life more than thirty scenes depicting the rural and artisanal life of late 19th-century Sicily, culminating in a Nativity scene set within the ruins of the Castello dei Marchesi Settimo. As the first Italian nativity scene to be recognized as being of International Interest, it is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.

One of Italy's most beautiful living nativity scenes

The Giarratana Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Christmas events in Sicily. Every year during the festive season, the small town of Giarratana, perched on the Iblei Mountains in the Province of Ragusa, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The re-enactment winds through the narrow streets of the ancient U Cuozzu district, the oldest part of the village, where stone houses and quiet alleys provide the perfect backdrop for a journey back in time.

The U Cuozzu district and the open-air museum

The route winds through the dwellings of U Cuozzu, now largely uninhabited but brought back to life for the occasion with lights, sounds, and costumed performers. Along the ancient streets, over thirty settings take shape, faithfully reconstructing the rural and artisanal civilization of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors walk through daily life scenes curated in every detail: bread making, cheese production, field work with period tools, household chores, and ancient crafts that have long since disappeared.

The Nativity and the Castello dei Marchesi Settimo

The journey culminates in the evocative setting of the Nativity, staged among the ruins of the Castello dei Marchesi Settimo (U Castieddu), which overlooks the village. The encounter between the sacred representation and the ancient architecture of the town provides one of the most moving moments of the visit. Over one hundred performers, including adults and children, bring the scene to life, dressed as biblical characters and traditional craftsmen.

A recognition of International Interest

Organized by the Comitato Cerretanum with the support of the municipal administration and local youth and women's councils, the Giarratana Living Nativity has established itself as one of the iconic events of the Sicilian Christmas. It was the first Italian nativity scene to receive the recognition of International Interest and has been awarded multiple times as the best living nativity in Sicily and Italy. The event combines faith, tradition, and community spirit, involving the entire town in a collective project that has been renewed for over thirty years.

An experience for the whole family

The visit, accompanied by the intimate atmosphere of the Iblei village, is suitable for all ages. At the end of the route, the women's council welcomes visitors with hot tea and slices of panettone, a gesture of hospitality that reflects the welcoming soul of Giarratana and Sicily.
