About Naxos Carnival

The Giardini-Naxos Carnival is the grand folk festival that brings color to the Ionian seafront of this town in the province of Messina. After a fourteen-year hiatus, the event returned in 2025, bringing papier-mâché floats back to the Lungomare Tysandros, accompanied by masked groups, dance schools, and live music. Organized by the Naxos Porto di Cultura Association in partnership with the local municipality, it is an event that blends Sicilian tradition, satire, and fun for all ages.

The seaside carnival of Giardini-Naxos

The Giardini-Naxos Carnival is one of the most anticipated events of the carnival season on the Ionian coast of the Messina province. Set in the famous seaside resort at the foot of Taormina, the event transforms the Lungomare Tysandros and the town center into an open-air stage, where papier-mâché floats parade against the backdrop of the Ionian Sea. It is a deeply cherished event for the community, uniting families, dance schools, and local associations in one big celebration.

A rediscovered tradition

After a fourteen-year absence, the Carnival returned to Giardini-Naxos in 2025, reviving a tradition very dear to the area. The heart of the festival lies in the allegorical floats, handcrafted by local papier-mâché masters: figures ranging from political satire to whimsical characters, in the true spirit of Carnival. The parades are brought to life by masked groups, music, and choreography in an atmosphere of shared joy.

The festival program

The Naxos Carnival spans several days, alternating grand papier-mâché float parades along the Lungomare Tysandros with events dedicated to children. Recurring highlights include the Baby Carnival, organized by the Municipality together with the local UNICEF group, and afternoon entertainment for children in the town squares, such as Piazza Agorà in the historic district of Giardini-Naxos.

Identity and territory

Set within the tourist landscape of Giardini-Naxos, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, the Carnival is much more than a simple party: it represents a reclaimed tradition and an occasion for shared celebration for the entire community. The event involves float-building masters, dance schools, local police, civil protection, and the Carabinieri, reflecting a collective effort that unites institutions and citizens.
