A hidden route of contemporary art among the historic collections of Milan's civic museums
Ghost Track is the project promoted by the Municipality of Milan (Lombardy) that animates Milan Art Week, the week dedicated to contemporary art that accompanies the miart fair. The idea is a hidden route - a "ghost track" - that intertwines contemporary art works with the city's civic museums' historic collections, creating unexpected connections between present and past.
The interventions are scattered across various sites of the civic museum system, including Sforza Castle, the Natural History Museum, and the Sormani Library. Among the artists involved are leading names on the international scene such as Maurizio Cattelan and Markus Schinwald, alongside other voices in contemporary research. The works are placed in the rooms among artifacts, paintings, and books, inviting the public to look at familiar places with new eyes.
Ghost Track confirms Milan's vocation as the Italian capital of contemporary art, capable of creating a dialogue between its historical institutions and the most current creativity. The project is designed as an invitation to discovery: no mandatory route, but a hunt for hidden works that transforms a museum visit into a different experience.
The 2026 edition of Ghost Track took place from April 13 to 19, within Milan Art Week. The project, promoted by the Municipality of Milan, scattered contemporary art works in the halls of the civic museums, creating a "ghostly" route that intertwines installations with historic collections.
Among the venues involved were Sforza Castle, the Natural History Museum, and the Sormani Library; among the artists, Maurizio Cattelan and Markus Schinwald, alongside other voices in contemporary research. The works invited the public to rediscover familiar places through the lens of current art.
The route was structured as a widespread "track" through Milan's civic museums during Milan Art Week 2026.
The works were placed in dialogue with the artifacts and permanent collections. Details and map of venues at www.comune.milano.it.
The venues are located in the center of Milan. Sforza Castle can be reached by metro M1 (Cairoli) and M2 (Lanza/Cadorna); the Sormani Library by M1 (San Babila); the Natural History Museum by M1 (Palestro) and trams to the Indro Montanelli Gardens.
The route takes place within the civic museums; the access conditions of each venue apply during Milan Art Week.
