About German Film Rome

Every March, the Cinema Quattro Fontane in the historic center of Rome hosts the German Film Festival: four days dedicated to contemporary German-language productions, including auteur feature films, documentaries, and short films, all screened in their original language with Italian subtitles. Italian premieres, meetings with directors and actors, and the Audience Award make this festival a highly anticipated event for cinema lovers in the capital.

A German festival in the center of Rome

The German Film Festival is the premier Italian showcase for contemporary German-language cinema. It takes place every year in March at the Cinema Quattro Fontane, in the Trevi district, just a short walk from Piazza Barberini and the famous Quattro Fontane intersection. Its location in the heart of Rome's historic center makes the festival easily accessible from anywhere in the capital of Lazio.

The event is promoted by German Films, the organization that has been promoting German cinema worldwide on behalf of the federal government for nearly thirty years, in collaboration with the Embassy of Germany in Rome, the Goethe-Institut Rom, and the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo.

Auteur programming

The lineup alternates between debut works and films by established directors, documentaries, short film series, and programs dedicated to new generations of filmmakers. All screenings are in original language with Italian subtitles, a choice that allows audiences to appreciate the acting and dialogue as originally conceived. Many titles arrive as Italian premieres and do not yet have distribution in our country: the festival is often the only opportunity to see them on the big screen.

  • Fiction feature films, ranging from auteur cinema to debut works
  • Documentaries, often dedicated to figures of German and European culture
  • Short film programs, such as the Next Generation Short Tiger selection from German film schools
  • Special events with the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo

Meetings with authors and the Audience Award

One of the festival's hallmarks is the constant presence of directors, actors, and writers in the theater: almost all evening screenings are followed by a Q&A session with the audience, moderated in Italian and German. Spectators are also invited to vote for their favorite film among those in competition, awarding the Audience Award, a recognition that reflects the true taste of the Roman audience.

A cultural bridge between Italy and Germany

Founded in 2021, the festival has quickly established itself as one of the most solid fixtures on the Roman spring film calendar, alongside the activities of the Goethe-Institut on Via Savoia and the German Academy at Villa Massimo. The festival portrays a pluralistic Germany grappling with contemporary tensions: historical memory, migration, labor, the transformation of family relationships, and the formal research of young authors. For the Italian public, it is also a way to measure the distance—and the closeness—between two European cinematographies that have often engaged in dialogue.

The Cinema Quattro Fontane

A historic theater in the center of Rome, the Quattro Fontane is part of the Circuito Cinema and is one of the few multiplexes remaining within the walls of the historic center. Its regular programming, oriented toward arthouse cinema and original-language screenings, makes it the natural home for an event like this. During the festival, the foyer becomes a meeting place for spectators, journalists, film students, and the German-speaking community residing in the capital.

Why attend

The German Film Festival is recommended for those who love European auteur cinema, those who study or speak German, and those looking for a cultural offering in Rome outside the beaten path. The four days are compact and concentrated in a single venue: it is possible to follow the entire program or choose a single title, with screenings distributed from the early afternoon until the evening.

German Film Rome — edition 2026

The sixth edition of the German Film Festival was held in Rome from March 19 to 22, 2026, at the Cinema Quattro Fontane. Opening the festival, in an Italian premiere, was Gavagai by Ulrich Köhler, presented in the presence of actress Maren Eggert. Four days of screenings in original language with Italian subtitles, including feature films, documentaries, and short films, with numerous guest authors in the theater and the Audience Award assigned to the film preferred by the spectators.

The 6th edition

Promoted by German Films with the Embassy of Germany in Rome, the Goethe-Institut, and the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo, the 2026 edition offered a broad panorama of the most recent German production. Several works were presented in Italian premiere, with directors present for discussions with the audience after the screening. Particular attention was paid to young authors, with the Next Generation Short Tiger 2025 selection dedicated to short films from German film schools, and to contemporary visual research with the special event PERFORMO PERFORMI PERFORMA!, curated by Andrea Winkler and Stefan Panhans, winners of the Rome Villa Massimo Prize 2025/2026.
