Ten free events featuring hidden masterpieces, music, and theatre in the city's churches
Genoa of the Arts is one of the city's most original cultural projects: a distributed festival that brings art, music, and theatre to the churches and historic spaces of all nine Municipalities of Genoa. The idea is to enhance the hidden masterpieces – often little-known paintings, sculptures, and art treasures – housed within the city's rich ecclesiastical heritage, returning them to the citizens in a new and engaging way.
Each event follows a three-part structure: the historical-artistic analysis of the work, revealing its history and meaning; the live musical performance, which dialogues with the art; and the theatrical interpretation of poetry and literature, completing the experience. A format that allows art to be experienced immersively and multidisciplinarily, far beyond a simple visit.
The festival is divided into ten free events spread from April to June, with three events in April, three in May, and four in June, taking place in churches and oratories across all city Municipalities. Artistically directed by Pino Petruzzelli, it involves collaborations with institutions such as the Teatro dell'Opera Carlo Felice, the Giovine Orchestra Genovese, and the Paganini Conservatory.
With over twenty works of art analyzed and more than fifty musical and literary pieces, Genoa of the Arts is a precious opportunity to discover the widespread heritage of Genoa and the Liguria region. Free admission without booking makes the festival a genuine gift to the city, capable of bringing great culture to the neighbourhoods and rediscovering its lesser-known treasures.
