Cultural afternoons exploring the villages of Monferrato, with a stop in Quargnento, the hometown of Carlo Carrà
Genius Loci - Afternoons in the Monferrato Villages is one of the most beloved cultural festivals in Monferrato, located in the heart of the province of Alessandria, in Piedmont. Promoted by the Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni Foundation in Cella Monte, the initiative guides the public through winter Sunday afternoons to discover the soul of the small Monferrato villages: the genius loci, or spirit of the place, told through its churches, palaces, stories, and historical figures.
In Quargnento, a municipality in the province of Alessandria nestled on the plains leading up to the Monferrato hills, the festival offers an afternoon dedicated to the town's artistic heritage. Quargnento is universally known as the birthplace of Carlo Carrà (1881-1966), one of the great protagonists of 20th-century Italian art and a signatory of the Manifesto of Futurist Painters. It is no coincidence that his full name was Carlo Dalmazio, in honor of the saint venerated in the village's basilica.
The heart of the visit is the Basilica of San Dalmazio, elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1992 for its spiritual, historical, and artistic value. Inside, it houses two masterpieces: the Renaissance polyptych by Gandolfino da Roreto, depicting the Madonna and Child between Saint Peter and Saint Dalmazio, and a rare 15th-century terracotta polyptych in the late Gothic style attributed to Francesco Filiberti. The route then continues to Carrà's birthplace and concludes with a theatrical performance dedicated to the Futurist avant-garde.
The strength of Genius Loci lies in its free admission: all stops are open to the public without mandatory reservations and take place even in the event of rain. It is a precious opportunity to rediscover, far from mass tourism circuits, the cultural richness of a hilly territory that combines art, history, and landscape. An ideal event for those who love slow tourism and want to get to know the authentic Monferrato and the province of Alessandria.
The Quargnento stop of Genius Loci - Afternoons in the Monferrato Villages took place on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 3:00 PM, with a gathering in Piazza I Maggio, in front of the Basilica of San Dalmazio. Visitors were welcomed by Luigi Benzi, Mayor of Quargnento. Promoted by the Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni Foundation, the day was dedicated to the figure of Carlo Carrà, the famous Futurist painter born in Quargnento, and to the village's rich artistic heritage. The initiative was supported by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria and Cosmo.
