About Galeina Grisa

On the night between April 30th and May 1st, the hamlets of Alta Val Tidone, in the province of Piacenza, relive the Galeina Grisa: an ancient tradition of singing and begging in which groups of singers, accompanied by the accordion, move from house to house and from farm to farm, singing the auspicious verses of spring. Along the itinerant route that crosses the villages of the valley, residents welcome the singers with banquets rich in wine and local products. A popular rite that intertwines the sacred and the profane and celebrates the awakening of nature.

A Rite Announcing Spring

The Galeina Grisa is one of the most evocative popular traditions of Alta Val Tidone, in the heart of the Apennines in the province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna. On the night between April 30th and May 1st, groups of singers travel through the hamlets and farmhouses of the valley, singing the auspicious verses that give the rite its name: a song quest that welcomes the arrival of the warm season and the renewal of nature. The itinerant version, revived by the Pro Loco Strà e Trevozzo, brings back to life a custom rooted in very ancient times.

An Ancient Tradition

The galeina grisa (the "grey hen" from the opening verse) belongs to the cycle of spring quests widespread in Val Tidone, straddling the provinces of Piacenza and Pavia. The tradition intertwines the auspicious May Day song (the cantamaggio) with the ancient egg begging associated with the Easter cycle: the egg, a symbol of rebirth, refers to the awakening of nature and, in Christian ritual, to the resurrection. Its origins date back to remote eras and are traced back to the Greek world and the Ligurian peoples who crossed these territories.

From House to House, From Farm to Farm

The heart of the Galeina Grisa is its itinerant nature. The singers, accompanied by the accordion, divide into groups to cover the different routes of the valley, densely dotted with villages and farmhouses. At each stop, they are welcomed by residents, who offer wine, cured meats, and typical local products, setting up real welcoming banquets. In the past, singers received eggs and food as gifts; even today, the rite retains its value of sharing and community bonding intact.

The Villages Involved

The itinerant edition starts from Cicogni, a hamlet in Alta Val Tidone, and crosses the villages of the valley to reach the territory of Pianello Val Tidone. The hamlets of Strà and Trevozzo are central to the route, with stops at farms and homes that open their doors to the singers.

A Heritage to Preserve

More than just a festival, the Galeina Grisa is an intangible heritage that the local Pro Loco organizations are committed to promoting and passing down. It involves families, children, and local singers, intertwining historical memory and village life in one of the most authentic valleys in the province of Piacenza.
