The historic parade of allegorical floats in the heart of Salento
The Galatone Carnival is one of the most deep-rooted and long-standing carnival events in Salento. In the town of Galatone, in the province of Lecce, tradition comes to life every winter with a grand parade of allegorical floats, transforming the town center into a vibrant path of color, music, and masks. Now in its 69th edition in 2026, the festival is organized by the "Andrea Papa" Galatone Carnival Committee, with the support of the "A. De Ferraris" Workers' Society, FIDAS Galatone, the Pro Loco, and local associations.
The heart of the event is the grand procession that sets off from Piazza Padre Pio in the afternoon, winding through the city's main streets. Papier-mâché allegorical floats, masked school groups, and costumed troupes create an engaging spectacle that attracts numerous visitors. The grand finale takes place in Piazza San Sebastiano, where the groups perform before a jury that judges creativity, costume quality, choreography, and visual impact.
The Galatone Carnival is rooted in the popular culture of Salento, where papier-mâché and the artistry of master float-makers are a core part of the local identity. The event is not purely competitive: schools receive recognition, and the entire community participates in building the floats, making the festival a moment of shared pride. The program is rounded out by the traditional Carnival Lottery and other side events, such as public celebrations in the square that accompany the carnival season.
The 69th edition of the Galatone Carnival was held on Monday, February 16, 2026. The grand procession started from Piazza Padre Pio at 3:00 PM and wound through the city streets, concluding in Piazza San Sebastiano with the awards ceremony. The event featured 8 allegorical floats, along with masked schools and costumed groups.
As part of the carnival program, the Carnival Lottery also returned, with the draw on February 16, 2026, and tickets costing 1 euro.
Galatone is located in the province of Lecce, in lower Salento. By car, it can be reached via the state road connecting Lecce to Gallipoli. The Galatone train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Lecce and Gallipoli. The nearest airport is Brindisi-Salento.
The parade through the town center is free and open to the public. During the day, specific municipal traffic regulations are in effect in the historic center. The Carnival Lottery is also active, with tickets available for a symbolic cost of 1 euro.
