Carnival in the heart of the Subequana Valley

The Gagliano Aterno Carnival is the signature festive event of Gagliano Aterno, a small village of just over two hundred residents perched on a hill overlooking the Subequana Valley, within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo). Promoted by the La stanzetta cultural association and included in the municipal events calendar, it is a community celebration that brings masks, confetti, and cheer to the stone-paved alleys of this medieval village.

A village festival created by the community

More than just a large tourist event, the Gagliano Aterno Carnival is an authentic gathering, built by the residents for the residents and for those who wish to discover the genuine soul of an Abruzzese village. Children and families are the stars of the show: costumes, games, traditional sweets, and the spontaneous participation of locals create a day dedicated to togetherness. The La stanzetta association, highly active in the village's cultural life, manages the organization alongside local stakeholders and the Municipality of Gagliano Aterno.

Between the castle, alleys, and traditions

The setting is one of the most evocative villages in inland Abruzzo: the Gagliano Aterno Castle, of medieval origin, the 14th-century Gothic fountain, and the ancient churches provide the backdrop for the festivities. The village is also known for its ancient confectionery traditions, featuring amaretti, confortini, and almond sweets whose recipes date back to the time of the Poor Clares monastery. The Carnival thus fits into the rich calendar of initiatives that, throughout the year, enliven a small but vibrant and dynamic community.

When it takes place

The Gagliano Aterno Carnival is held during the carnival season, between late winter and early spring.
