The distributed performing arts festival that transforms 17 districts of Milan into an open-air stage
FringeMI is Milan's distributed performing arts festival: a large container that every year, between late May and early June, brings shows out of conventional venues and into the city's daily life. In the 2026 edition, there are 224 events spread across 17 districts of the Municipality of Milan (Metropolitan City of Milan, Lombardy), including NoLo, Dergano, Lambrate, Martesana, Adriano, Gallaratese, Calvairate Romana, Villapizzone, Barona, San Siro, Giambellino Lorenteggio, Ortica, Cittร Studi-Acquabella, as well as the new areas of Greco, Vigentino, Corvetto, Cenisio, Ponte Lambro, and Quinto Romano.
The heart of the festival is the idea that theatre can inhabit any space. Shows are staged in venues, bookshops, co-working spaces, private apartments, artist studios, publishing houses and radio stations, streets, squares, gardens, and even a newsstand. It's an experience that blends new dramaturgy, prose, narrative theatre, song-theatre, stand-up, and music, with a wide range of shows for families, book presentations, buskers, workshops, and itinerant performances.
The programme is divided into two sections. The Official Programme features 24 shows selected from over 300 applications received through an international call, performed in rotation for five consecutive evenings. The Fringe Extra section, on the other hand, includes performances, meetings, and events in the preceding days, spread widely across the districts. There is no imposed theme or centralized artistic direction: each district is managed by local entities, ensuring an authentic connection with the territory.
NoLo, the district north of Loreto from which it all began, remains the pulsating heart of the festival and hosts most of the events, between Factory NoLo, Parco Trotter, and the venues in Via Padova. Dergano, in Municipality 9, is one of the historic districts of the event. FringeMI is today a reference point for Milan's independent theatre scene and an opportunity to discover corners of the city far from the tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of FringeMI, the eighth, confirms the formula of the distributed festival: 224 events in 17 districts, from May 22 to June 6. Among the new features are the inclusion of six new districts (Greco, Vigentino, Corvetto, Cenisio, Ponte Lambro, Quinto Romano), which are added to the historic hubs of NoLo and Dergano.
The opening is on May 22 in the spaces of mosso (corner of Via Padova / Via Mosso), with free admission. The festival then continues with Fringe Extra until June 1 and with the Official Programme from June 2 to 6.
Performances, meetings, book presentations, buskers, workshops, and itinerant shows spread across the 17 districts.
The detailed programme by district is available at www.fringemi.com.
