About FrankenBierFest

Every spring, the Limonaia of Villa Torlonia transforms into a Franconian outpost: FrankenBierFest brings the beers of small, family-run rural breweries from northern Bavaria to Rome, poured traditionally straight from wooden barrels without added carbon dioxide. Kellerbier, Rauchbier, Landbier, and Dunkel that rarely cross their village borders, accompanied by authentic German cuisine and an open-air Gaststätte atmosphere.

A piece of Franconia in the heart of Rome

For three days in April, the Limonaia of Villa Torlonia, in Rome's Nomentano district, becomes the Italian hub for Franconian beer culture. FrankenBierFest is currently the only event in Italy that allows you to taste these beers in ideal conditions, selected one by one and served with almost philological attention. This is not a generic beer festival: it is a guided journey into a precise tradition, that of the German region boasting the highest density of breweries in the world.

Why Franconia is unique

Franconia is the area north of Bavaria where village breweries have remained small and family-run: there are about 300 microbreweries, with over 200 in Upper Franconia alone. Production remains a family affair, tied to the rhythms of the land and seasons, with limited volumes that are rarely exported and usually intended for local consumption. Many of these labels have never left their village borders: bringing them to Rome is a research effort that renews itself every year.

The styles on the program

The festival is a rare opportunity to understand Franconian styles up close, all presented in their unfiltered and unpasteurized form:

  • Kellerbier — "cellar beers," with a rustic character and herbaceous hop profile, naturally cloudy;
  • Rauchbier — the iconic smoked beers of Bamberg, with notes of burnt wood and fireplace;
  • Landbier — country beers, daily and savory;
  • Dunkel — dark, malty, smooth, and thirst-quenching;
  • Bock — the more structured and alcoholic versions of the tradition.

Pouring from wooden barrels

The festival's hallmark is gravity pouring: many beers are served directly from wooden barrels transported to Rome for the occasion, using only gravity without added carbon dioxide. It is a method that preserves the product's softness and body, delivering a drinking experience you won't find in a bottle. The official opening on Friday afternoon features the traditional 50-liter welcome barrel, with samples offered to all attendees.

The signature of Manuele Colonna

The artistic direction is led by Manuele Colonna, a Roman publican and author of the book "Birra in Franconia," recognized as one of the leading experts on the Franconian brewing scene. His selection determines each year which rare kegs arrive at the Limonaia, prioritizing municipal breweries and small village producers over brands already known to the Italian public.

Cuisine and atmosphere

Alongside the beer, the Limonaia turns into an open-air Gaststätte, the classic German tavern: schnitzel, artisanal bratwurst, pretzels, and traditional desserts, all designed to pair with the styles on the program. Shared tables, ceramic mugs, and the greenery of Villa Torlonia complete an experience that is as gastronomic as it is convivial.

A consolidated appointment in Lazio

Born in 2016, FrankenBierFest has become one of the most anticipated brewing events in Lazio and reached its tenth edition in 2026. The free-entry format, with only the cost of the souvenir glass, has made it a cross-generational event: expert enthusiasts, curious newcomers, and local families gather in the same space, in one of the most beautiful historic villas in the Capital.

FrankenBierFest — edition 2026

The tenth edition of FrankenBierFest was held at the Limonaia of Villa Torlonia from April 10 to 12, 2026, featuring about 91 Franconian breweries and approximately 150 beers on tap. An anniversary edition that confirmed the well-tested formula: wooden barrel pouring, German cuisine, and free entry.

The tenth edition

In 2026, FrankenBierFest celebrated its first ten years with a particularly rich edition. The Limonaia of Villa Torlonia hosted the products of about 91 breweries from Franconia, for a total of approximately 150 beers on tap, many of which were served directly from wooden barrels using gravity pouring.

The organizational novelty of the year was the introduction of the contactless electronic wristband replacing traditional tokens, rechargeable via app or at the cash desks. The selection signed by Manuele Colonna was confirmed, with special attention to municipal breweries and small village producers.
