Two days of markets, street food, live music, and DJ sets at Forte Trionfale for Liberation Day
Forte Liberato is the event that transforms the Forte Trionfale in Rome into an open square for the entire city during the April 25th weekend. Located in the Trionfale district on the northern edge of the Capital, where the city fades into the Roman countryside, this military complex hosts markets, street food, live music, and DJ sets for two consecutive days, from noon to midnight, with completely free entry.
Forte Trionfale is one of the fifteen 19th-century forts that make up Rome's defensive ring. Long inaccessible, a portion of the complex was temporarily entrusted to the company Urban Value in 2024 through an agreement between Rome Capital and the Ministry of Defense, with the goal of returning it to the public as a cultural space. It spans approximately 3,000 square meters of outdoor area and 2,900 square meters indoors, including hangarsโthe very spot from which, according to local history, the first airship bound for the North Pole departed.
This history explains why the event is more than just a party: April 25th becomes an opportunity to showcase how a forgotten public asset can be brought back to life. The name itself, Forte Liberato, plays on the double meaning of Liberation and the restitution of the space to its inhabitants.
The event is intentionally intergenerational: families and children during the day, and a younger crowd in the evening when the courtyard turns into a dance floor. The formula works because it combines two things rarely found together in Rome: an important civic holiday like April 25th and a relaxed, convivial format built on social interaction and the pleasure of meeting outside the usual entertainment venues.
During the Liberation weekend, Municipality XIV hosts other civic initiatives in the area, such as commemorations and dedications to the memory of the Resistance. Visitors coming from outside Rome can combine a visit to the Fort with exploring the northern part of the city: the Via Trionfale, the Pineto Park, the Monte Mario complex, and the Veio Regional Park just a bit further north.
Forte Liberato is one of the few opportunities of the year to cross the threshold of a Roman military fort without paying an entrance fee. It is a neighborhood festival with the spirit of the entire city: you go for the market and the food trucks, but you stay for the music and the joy of seeing a forgotten space return to being fully public, at least for a weekend.
The 2026 edition took place on Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th at the Forte Trionfale in Rome, with continuous hours from 12:00 PM to midnight and free entry. The program alternated the convivial atmosphere of the market and street food with a more civic side, featuring public debates dedicated to the reuse of the city's disused spaces.
Saturday started early, with lunch accompanied by live bands; in the afternoon, a meeting was held with Marco Della Porta, President of Municipality XIV, on the recovery and care of abandoned spaces. From 6:00 PM onwards, the courtyard turned into a dance floor with electronic and house DJ sets. Sunday featured a K-pop tribute, a second panel on the enhancement and reuse of public spaces, and, in closing, Caribbean rhythms with reggae, dancehall, and Roman soundsystems.
On the same day, Sunday, April 26th, Municipality XIV inaugurated a plaque at Parco Ondina Peteani (Via Nosate, Selva Candida) dedicated to the first female partisan messenger of the liberation struggle against Nazifascism.
Forte Trionfale, Via Trionfale 7400, 00135 Rome (Trionfale district, northern area of the Capital).
By car: Take exit 1 of the Grande Raccordo Anulare towards Via Trionfale; parking is available on nearby streets, though they tend to be crowded in the evening. By public transport: Regional train FL3 to Ottavia station, then local buses along Via Trionfale; alternatively, ATAC surface lines running up Via Trionfale from Cornelia (Metro Line A).
Open from 12:00 PM to midnight on both days. Free entry; food, drinks, and market purchases are paid. Online registration is recommended when provided by the organizer.
The courtyard is mostly outdoors: comfortable shoes and a sweater for the April evening are useful. The event is family-friendly during the day, while the evening is more focused on DJ sets.
