Floats, masks, and music in Piazza Trento, in the heart of the Liri Valley
The Fontana Liri Carnival is one of the most popular winter festivals in the town of Fontana Liri, located in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. It is not a monumental historical carnival like those in major cities; rather, it is a community-driven celebration where the village gathers for a few days of confetti, masks, music, and allegorical floats. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Fontana Liri in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the Il Castello Cultural Association, with the essential contribution of local volunteers and associations.
The unique aspect of the Fontana Carnival is its openness to the surrounding area: the town is part of a true carnival circuit that involves neighboring municipalities, from Arce to Strangolagalli, from Monte San Giovanni Campano to Ripi, Torrice, and Arpino. This way, the allegorical floats built during the winter by local carnival groups do not parade just once, but travel through multiple squares in the Liri Valley, making Fontana Liri one of the most anticipated stops on the calendar.
Alongside the guest floats, the town also showcases its own creations: structures made of papier-mรขchรฉ and lightweight materials, often inspired by cartoon characters, satire, or current events, crafted by local artisans and volunteers.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Trento, which transforms into a large open-air stage on the Saturday afternoon of Carnival. The parade brings together:
In the days leading up to the event, the program expands to younger audiences with children's theater performances and the Tuesday street party, moments designed to let everyone experience the Carnival, even those who do not follow the parade.
Fontana Liri is a small town nestled between the Liri River and the hills of Ciociaria, also known as the hometown of Marcello Mastroianni's family and for its historic gunpowder factory. Experiencing the Carnival here means rediscovering the most authentic dimension of an Italian village festival: no tickets, no fences, just a square full of people who know each other, open bars and bakeries, seasonal sweets like chiacchiere and castagnole, and the feeling that everything was handmade in the preceding months.
For those visiting the province of Frosinone in winter, the Fontana Carnival pairs well with other stops on the circuit: during the same period, you can follow the float parade in several nearby towns, discovering a piece of Lazio's popular tradition that is still very much alive.
The event is not commercial in nature: it is financed and supported primarily by the Municipality, local associations, and the free work of volunteers. For this reason, the program may vary from year to year, adapting to the liturgical calendar of Carnival and the availability of the district's carnival groups. Those wishing to attend should check the notices from the Municipality and local associations in the preceding weeks, when flyers with final dates and times are released.
The 2026 Fontana Carnival was promoted by the Municipality of Fontana Liri with the Pro Loco and the Il Castello Cultural Association. The calendar opened on Sunday, February 15, with "The Children's Theater" and the show The Wizard of Oz at the Multipurpose Center, continued on Tuesday, February 17, with the Carnival party in Piazza Trento, and concluded on Saturday, February 28, with the grand parade of allegorical floats.
The parade, which started in the early afternoon from Piazza Trento, brought together floats from the Liri Valley and Ciociaria carnival circuit โ Arce, Strangolagalli, Monte San Giovanni Campano, Torrice โ as well as two floats prepared in town by Eloisa Iafrate. Numerous masked and entertainment groups paraded, including the AFAS Association, the Progetti Lucchesi Association, the Colleprato District, the "Quess e gl Mont Mie'" group by Danilo Battisti, and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" from Arpino, along with a Dominican dance group.
Admission was free and the event, designed "for young and old," closed the carnival season for the district.
Fontana Liri is located in the province of Frosinone, in the Liri Valley. By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, exit at Ceprano or Frosinone, then provincial roads towards Arce and Fontana Liri. By train: the most convenient station is Arce on the Roccasecca-Avezzano line, or Frosinone on the Rome-Cassino line, with a connection by bus or taxi.
The float parade and main events are held in Piazza Trento, in the town center. During the weekday events, the municipal Multipurpose Center and surrounding streets are also used.
Admission is free. It is advisable to arrive a little early because the square fills up quickly and parking in the center is limited; it is more convenient to leave your car in the outer areas and reach the square on foot. Winter clothing, comfortable shoes, and a mask for children are more than enough.
