The celebrations of the 1848 uprising
The Five Days of Milan commemorate the uprising of 1848, when, from March 18 to 22, the city rose up against Austrian rule with barricades and urban clashes that lasted five days. It is one of the foundational pages of the Risorgimento and the identity of Milan, the capital of Lombardy, remembered every year with a rich program of initiatives.
The celebrations open with the official ceremony at the Monument to the Five Days, the work of Giuseppe Grandi inaugurated in 1895 in Piazza Cinque Giornate. This is followed by guided tours of the monument, historical exhibitions, and initiatives in the places of Risorgimento memory, from the Museum of the Risorgimento to the Monumental Cemetery, dedicated to figures such as Clara Maffei and Carlo Cattaneo.
The most spectacular moment is the historical re-enactment at Parco Formentano, with costumed participants representing the key moments of the revolt: simulations of battles, theatrical scenes, and the reconstruction of barricades. An engaging way to relive those days and bring history closer to the public, especially the younger generation.
Organized by the Municipality of Milan with Municipality 4 and numerous historical and re-enactment associations, the Five Days are an event that intertwines institutions, culture, and popular participation, keeping alive the memory of an event that marked the history of Italy.
The 2026 edition of the Five Days of Milan celebrates the 178th anniversary of the 1848 uprising with a program spread between March 18 and 22, and the grand historical re-enactment at Parco Formentano on Saturday, March 28.
The initiatives involve the symbolic places of the city's Risorgimento memory, with official ceremonies, guided tours, exhibitions, and theatrical scenes, thanks to the collaboration between the Municipality of Milan, Municipality 4, and numerous historical and re-enactment associations.
