The opening stage of the Italian Motosurf Championship on the Ionian Sea
In June 2026, the Italian Motosurf Championship, organized under the aegis of the Italian Motorboat Federation (FIM), selected the coastline of Castellaneta Marina, a seaside district of the municipality of Castellaneta in the province of Taranto, as the venue for its opening stage. Motosurf is a young and rapidly growing discipline: riders compete on carbon-fiber surfboards equipped with 100cc internal combustion engines, capable of skimming across the water at high speeds.
The event took place from Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Lido La Playa (La Playa Beach Sport) in Castellaneta Marina, one of the most popular stretches of the Ionian coast in the Taranto area. The event officially kicked off the national competitive motosurf season, attracting riders from various regions of Italy.
Races are held on a circuit marked by buoys and anchors, where pilots challenge each other in groups, heat after heat. A safety tether connects the rider to the board and regulates the engine's throttle. In Castellaneta Marina, the winner was determined after four heats in the PRO class.
The stage was born from the collaboration between the sports association Surf Boom, the creator and organizer, the Italian Motorboat Federation, and the municipal administration of Castellaneta, with the patronage of the Puglia Region. The stated goal is to promote fun and introduce more people to this discipline, while showcasing the sea and beaches of the municipality of Castellaneta as a stage for summer nautical sports.
The event takes place directly at the water's edge: the public can follow the races comfortably from the beach at Lido La Playa. The Castellaneta Marina stage represents the opening act of the championship, which concludes with the decisive stage at Lago del Salto in Rieti, where the Italian Champion title is awarded.
The first edition of the Castellaneta Marina stage took place from Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Lido La Playa. Friday was dedicated to setting up the race course and registering the riders; the actual races were held on Saturday and Sunday, consisting of four heats on a buoy-marked circuit.
The winner was 18-year-old Lorenzo Tanda (Motosurf ASD, Monza), the reigning national champion, with 100 points. Also on the podium were Oleg Mihulka (72 points) and Yevgen Lafazan (60 points). The stage opened the championship season, which then headed toward the decisive round at Lago del Salto in Rieti, scheduled for September 4-6, 2026.
Castellaneta Marina can be reached via the SS106 Jonica highway; by car, it is approximately 40 km from Taranto and 45 km from Matera. The reference railway station is Castellaneta, which is connected to the marina. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Brindisi-Casale.
The competitions take place in front of Lido La Playa (La Playa Beach Sport) in Castellaneta Marina. The public can watch for free from the beach.
Late June, coinciding with the start of the beach season on the Ionian coast of Taranto.
