The great December 8th fair, the 'Fair of Fairs' of Venafro
Every December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Venafro (province of Isernia) hosts the city's most important fair, called in the local dialect 'r' la Cuncètta'. It is the culmination of an entire week of markets which, together, constitute the so-called 'Fiera delle Fiere' (Fair of Fairs): the largest and most anticipated fair event in the Venafro calendar.
The fair has ancient origins and historically took place behind the church of Purgatorio and along the road to Pozzilli. It was considered the largest market in Molise: livestock – pigs, horses, oxen, calves, sheep, goats, and poultry – from neighboring regions converged here. A commercial and agricultural vocation that has shaped the identity of the territory for centuries.
Today, the Fiera dell'Immacolata retains its character as a major city market, intertwined with the religious celebration of December 8th. Stalls and visitors fill the streets and squares of Venafro on one of the liveliest days of the year, bridging the devotional aspect of the Immaculate Conception and the village's long fair tradition.
