The historic fair of Isernia documented since 1487
The Fiera delle Cipolle of Isernia, also known as Fiera di San Pietro, is one of the oldest mercantile traditions in Molise. The festival dedicated to the apostle Peter has been documented since the 15th century: as early as 1487 the 'Capitoli della Bagliva' mention 'the feast and fair of St. Peter the Apostle', while subsequent chapters (1539-1620) regulated the sale of onions, cited as a characteristic product of the Isernia plain.
The heart of the fair is the white Isernia onion, with its sweet flavor and flattened bulb, an agricultural symbol of the territory. The streets of the center fill with local producers, while restaurants and stands offer dishes and omelets made entirely from onions, transforming the city into a large taste laboratory. A popular legend links the onion to Saint Peter, whose mother, according to the story, gave a single onion to a poor old woman.
Traditionally held around June 28th and 29th, coinciding with the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the fair takes place in Piazzale Erennio Ponzio and the historic center, intertwining the religious dimension with the commercial and gastronomic one. It is an identity event that for centuries has drawn visitors and producers from the entire province to Isernia, the capital of Molise.
The Fiera delle Cipolle di San Pietro 2026 takes place in Isernia on June 26th and 27th, closing the month's event calendar. The streets of the center are filled with producers of the famous white Isernia onion, with its sweet flavor and flattened bulb.
Restaurants and stands offer dishes and omelets made entirely from onions, while the historic fair maintains its character as a major popular and gastronomic event in the heart of the Molise capital, continuing a tradition documented for over five centuries.
The detailed program with any shows and tastings will be defined by the Municipality of Isernia closer to the event.
The white Isernia onion sold directly by producers; onion-based dishes and omelets at the stands and restaurants in the center.
The fair takes place in Piazza Erennio Ponzio and in the historic center of Isernia, which is accessible on foot. Isernia is connected by car via the SS17 and SS650 Trignina roads and by train on the Rome-Campobasso-Isernia line.
Free admission. It is the ideal opportunity to buy the white Isernia onion directly from local producers and taste the typical onion-based dishes.
