The solemn celebrations of the patron saint of cooks at the Sanctuary of Ostra Vetere
The Festival of Saint Paschal Baylon is one of the most heartfelt devotional events in the municipality of Ostra Vetere, in the province of Ancona, in the heart of the Marche Region. The celebrations take place at the Sanctuary of Saint Paschal Baylon, entrusted to the Friars Minor, which stands on Santa Croce hill opposite the town. Built from the early 17th century and enriched over the centuries with valuable works of art, the sanctuary is today a point of reference for Eucharistic devotion in the entire Diocese of Senigallia.
Saint Paschal Baylon (1540-1592), a humble Franciscan friar of Spanish origin, is universally venerated as the patron saint of cooks and pastry chefs: according to popular tradition, he is credited with inventing zabaglione, whose name is said to derive from his. Proclaimed patron of Eucharistic Congresses by Leo XIII in 1897, he is remembered as the "theologian of the Eucharist". His feast day falls on May 17th, the day on which Ostra Vetere gathers around its saint with a participation that each year draws faithful from outside the region as well.
The solemnities are spread over several days, combining liturgical moments and popular events:
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival preserves the warmth of Marche popular tradition: in the sanctuary courtyard, a charity raffle is held, while the streets adjacent to the convent come alive with the Saint Paschal Fair, featuring dozens of stalls offering products, sweets, and crafts. Illuminations light up the village and, to close the celebrations, a grand evening fireworks display lights up the sky above Santa Croce hill, providing a highly evocative finale to one of the most beloved patronal festivals in the Ancona hinterland.
The 2026 celebrations in honour of Saint Paschal Baylon in Ostra Vetere kicked off on Sunday, May 10th, with the 10:30 am mass and the traditional blessing of motorcycles, which attracted motorcyclists from all over the Marche region. From May 14th to 16th, the triduum with Rosary and evening mass took place, followed by the jubilee pilgrimage from the parishes to the sanctuary.
The solemn day of May 17th offered masses at 9:30 am, 10:30 am, and 11:30 am, including the jubilee celebration presided over by Mons. Giuseppe Orlandoni, emeritus bishop of Senigallia. In the afternoon, the blessing of children at 5:00 pm preceded the procession at 6:00 pm with the statue of Saint Paschal from the convent to the town centre. The festival concluded at 10:30 pm with the fireworks display, accompanied by the charity raffle and the Saint Paschal Fair.
Ostra Vetere is located in the hinterland of the province of Ancona, in the middle Misa Valley. By car, it can be reached from the Senigallia exit of the A14 motorway (about 25 km), continuing inland along the SP12. The nearest train station is Senigallia, on the Adriatic line, from where you can continue by bus or car. The Sanctuary of Saint Paschal Baylon is located on Santa Croce hill, just outside the town.
The celebrations are concentrated in the second half of May, around the 17th, the day of the liturgical feast. Participation in religious services, the procession, the fair, and the fireworks display is free. It is advisable to arrive early on days of high attendance, especially on the Sunday of the solemn feast.
