The Marian festival in Chiaramonte Gulfi, featuring the "Cuncursu" and a candlelight procession
The Festival of Maria SS. delle Grazie is one of the most anticipated religious events in Chiaramonte Gulfi, a stunning village in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Ragusa, Sicily. The devotion has its origins in the 17th century and is linked to the community's gratitude for the protection received. The statue of the Madonna is kept in the Church of Maria SS. delle Grazie, near the pine forest overlooking the town, and every year, at the end of May, it becomes the protagonist of intense days of faith, tradition, and popular participation.
The heart of the festival is marked by two traditional moments. The "Sciuta" opens the festivities with the procession of the statue through the city streets, reaching the municipal cemetery and the Church of San Giovanni in a journey of prayer and liturgical chants. However, the most evocative moment is the "Cuncursu": the ascent of the Madonna's statue along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the prayers and songs of the faithful. Along the way, the procession stops at the cemetery for the traditional "Blessing of the Fields," a ritual that recalls the agricultural and spiritual roots of the Chiaramonte area.
One of the most characteristic images of the festival is that of the decorated houses: as per tradition, families adorn their balconies and facades with precious blankets, lamps, plants, and rose petals, transforming the streets into a path of light and color as the statue passes by. The procession is accompanied by the "Vito Cutello" and "Alessandro Scarlatti" brass bands, which perform traditional pieces, while the evening candlelight celebration with the Madonna's relics crosses the historic center from Piazza Duomo to the Friars' Church.
The days are filled with numerous Eucharistic celebrations, moments of prayer such as the meditated Rosary, the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and the singing of the Te Deum, in addition to community evenings organized by the festival committee. As the community priests remind us, the Madonna delle Grazie represents "a spiritual reference point for the entire community" of Chiaramonte Gulfi, capable of bringing together residents, families, and emigrants who return to the village for the occasion.
Visiting the festival is also an opportunity to discover Chiaramonte Gulfi, nicknamed the "Balcony of Sicily" for its views that stretch from the Iblei mountains to the sea. Among alleys, Baroque churches, and the fresh air of the pine forest, the town offers one of the most fascinating settings in the province of Ragusa to experience an authentic Marian tradition, far from mass tourism circuits.
The 2026 Festival of Maria SS. delle Grazie in Chiaramonte Gulfi renewed its intense religious program. Monday, May 25, featured various Eucharistic celebrations, from the morning mass to the "candlelight prayer" at 8:30 PM with the Madonna's relics, along the route from Piazza Duomo to the Friars' Church. Tuesday, May 26, the main day, included morning masses, the meditated Rosary at 6:45 PM, the Eucharistic celebration at 7:30 PM presided over by Archpriest Graziano Martorana, the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the blessing, and the singing of the Te Deum, followed by the festival committee's community evening. The final day featured the traditional "Cuncursu," the ascent of the statue along the streets of the center, with a stop at the cemetery for the "Blessing of the Fields."
Chiaramonte Gulfi can be reached by car via the SS115 and the provincial roads of the Iblei; the nearest airport is Comiso (about 30 km away). The reference railway stations are Ragusa and Vittoria, which are connected by bus.
The celebrations take place in the historic center and at the Sanctuary of Maria SS. delle Grazie, near the pine forest. The "Cuncursu" procession starts in the late afternoon along the city streets.
Free admission to all services and processions. It is recommended to arrive early to witness the "Cuncursu" and to respect the religious nature of the event.
