About Feast of the Most Holy Saviour

Every year on August 6th, marking the Transfiguration of the Lord, Chiaramonte Gulfi celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Saviour, one of the most deeply felt devotions in this Iblean town. Organized by the historic Confraternity of the Most Holy Saviour, the festival weaves together solemn liturgies, festive bell-ringing, cannon blasts at dawn, symphonic marches by the local band in Piazza Duomo, and the distribution of characteristic sunflowers to the faithful. The highlight is the evening procession of the marble statue through the historic center, blending popular faith with Sicilian tradition.

The Feast of the Most Holy Saviour in Chiaramonte Gulfi

In the heart of the Iblean Mountains, the town of Chiaramonte Gulfi, in the province of Ragusa (Sicily), dedicates one of its most deep-rooted religious festivals to the Most Holy Saviour. The solemnity is celebrated on August 6th, the day the Church commemorates the Transfiguration of the Lord, bringing the entire community together around an ancient cult, proudly preserved by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Saviour, one of the oldest in the city.

The days of the festival

The festivities span several days between late July and early August, featuring Eucharistic celebrations, moments of adoration, and the evocative unveiling of the marble statue of the Most Holy Saviour, kept in the church of the same name. Spiritual preparation, marked by masses in the town's churches, readies the community for the solemn day of August 6th.

August 6th: The Solemnity

The day of the feast begins at dawn with festive bell-ringing and cannon blasts echoing through the town streets, repeated at noon. In the morning, the evocative distribution of sunflowers takes place, a devotional sign linking the light of the flower to the figure of the Saviour, while the brass band enlivens Piazza Duomo with its symphonic marches. Eucharistic celebrations continue until the solemn mass, presided over by the rector of the confraternity.

The evening procession

The most anticipated moment arrives in the late afternoon with the lowering of the statue and its preparation for the solemn procession, which on the evening of August 6th winds through the main streets of the historic center, including Corso Umberto, Via Roma, and Piazza Duomo. Amidst prayers, hymns, and the moved participation of the faithful, the statue of the Most Holy Saviour is carried in triumph through the streets of the town, in one of the most representative images of Iblean popular religiosity.

A continuing tradition

In recent years, the festival has been enriched with complementary events, such as the Most Holy Saviour Lottery draw and civil and recreational moments involving families and visitors. The Feast of the Most Holy Saviour thus remains a staple of the Chiaramonte summer, capable of uniting the spiritual dimension with community celebration in a town known as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" and for its ancient olive oil tradition.
