About Festival of Correspondences

Every September, the small medieval village of Monte del Lago, a hamlet of Magione overlooking Lake Trasimeno, becomes the beating heart of a festival that starts from epistolary correspondence to tell stories of history, artists, and the present. Within the walls of Villa Aganoor Pompilj and in the village squares, writers, journalists, historians, and scientists weave together memorial narratives and civil debate. The festival was born as part of the Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj National Prize dedicated to letters and correspondence.

A festival that starts with letters

The Festival of Correspondences is held in Monte del Lago, one of the most picturesque hamlets of the municipality of Magione, in the province of Perugia. It's a medieval village overlooking Lake Trasimeno. Born in 2015 as part of the Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj National Prize, the festival uses epistolary correspondence as the common thread for a journey through history, literature, journalism, and civil engagement.

A unique format in Umbria

The festival intertwines memorial narrative and debate on the present through the myriad possibilities offered by letters, correspondence, and epistolary collections. Each edition revolves around a theme that dialogues between the biographical events of cultural protagonists and major contemporary issues: hate speech, the impoverishment of language, the relationship between freedom and power.

Guests and protagonists

Over the years, the festival has hosted some of the most authoritative voices in Italian culture, from Paolo Mieli to Ezio Mauro, from Stefano Massini to Walter Veltroni, as well as scientists like Stefano Mancuso. The evenings alternate between show-lectures, readings, meetings, music, and theater, in an intimate atmosphere that makes Monte del Lago a magical place.

The Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj Prize

The original heart of the event is the Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj National Prize, dedicated to letters and correspondence and named after the poetess who spent a significant part of her life at Villa Aganoor in Monte del Lago. The prize celebrates the art of epistolary writing in an era of digital communication.

On Lake Trasimeno

Visiting the festival also means discovering one of the most beautiful corners of Lake Trasimeno: the sunsets over the lake, the village alleys, the tranquility of an authentic and uncrowded Umbria. A cultural and landscape experience to be fully enjoyed.

Festival of Correspondences — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Festival of Correspondences returns to Monte del Lago di Magione in early September, confirming the formula that intertwines letters, correspondence, history, and debate on the present with prominent guests from the Italian cultural scene.

The Festival of Correspondences 2026 confirms its early September appointment in the village of Monte del Lago, on Lake Trasimeno. The event will offer, as usual, a series of meetings, show-lectures, readings, and musical moments hosted between Villa Aganoor Pompilj and the village squares, accompanied by the Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj National Prize dedicated to letters and correspondence.
