The Patron Saint's Festival of Saint Stephen

In the municipality of Cesano Maderno (Province of Monza and Brianza, Lombardy), the Festa Patronale di Santo Stefano Protomartire is the most cherished event of the year. The patron saint is traditionally celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September, with celebrations taking place throughout the week and involving the Church of Santo Stefano, an ancient building in the historic centre, and the entire city. The choice of the fourth Sunday of September, rather than December 26th – the saint's liturgical date – responds to a custom that allows the festival to be enjoyed in a milder and more participatory period.
