Cesano Maderno celebrates its patron saint on the fourth Sunday of September
In the municipality of Cesano Maderno (Province of Monza and Brianza, Lombardy), the Festa Patronale di Santo Stefano Protomartire is the most cherished event of the year. The patron saint is traditionally celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September, with celebrations taking place throughout the week and involving the Church of Santo Stefano, an ancient building in the historic centre, and the entire city. The choice of the fourth Sunday of September, rather than December 26th – the saint's liturgical date – responds to a custom that allows the festival to be enjoyed in a milder and more participatory period.
The heart of the festival is religious: solemn masses, moments of prayer, and the procession with which the community pays homage to the patron saint mark the days of the celebration. Popular devotion merges with community festivity, in an event that brings different generations together around their roots. The services attract faithful from all the city's parishes, in an atmosphere of recollection and shared celebration.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the patronal week offers shows, entertainment, and the traditional stalls that liven up the streets of the centre, transforming Cesano Maderno into a great meeting place. The festival is so deeply rooted in Cesano's identity that the immediately following Monday the municipal offices remain closed for the patron saint's occasion: a tangible sign of how much Saint Stephen is an integral part of the city's life, memory, and tradition.
In 2026, the Festa Patronale di Santo Stefano falls on the fourth Sunday of September, September 27th, with the week of celebrations preceding it. The program, according to tradition, includes solemn masses, the procession in honour of the patron saint, shows, and the traditional stalls in the centre of Cesano Maderno. The following Monday, municipal offices remain closed for the occasion. The detailed program is published by the parish and the municipality in the weeks prior.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Parish of Santo Stefano and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the festival, on the official channels (including the Facebook page "Festa Patronale di Santo Stefano Cesano Maderno"). Following the pattern of recent editions, the patronal week (culminating on Sunday, September 27th) includes solemn masses, the procession in honour of the patron saint, shows, and the traditional stalls in the city centre.
