Amelia celebrates its patron saint with faith and historical reenactment
In Amelia, an ancient city in the province of Terni in southern Umbria, Saint Fermina has been the patron saint venerated for centuries. Her festival, celebrated on November 24th, is one of the defining events for the community of Amelia, uniting the religious dimension with the historical and civil one.
The festival is preceded by a three-day preparation period and culminates on November 24th, marked by solemn Masses in the Cathedral of Amelia. Alongside the religious celebrations, the day offers a true historical reenactment: the historical procession of the districts in 14th-century costumes, the ox-drawn cart, and, above all, the ancient ritual of the weighing and offering of candles by the mayors of the Mandamento, as stipulated by the municipal Statutes of 1346.
The festival involves the entire city: flag-throwers and musicians liven up the squares, the procession winds through the historic center, and collateral events – an artisan market, food stalls, and live music – accompany the day. Promoted by the Pro Loco of Amelia, the Festival of Saint Fermina is a fixed annual event that preserves a heritage of rites and traditions dating back to the Middle Ages, making it one of the most characteristic patron saint festivals in southern Umbria.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Fermina takes place in Amelia from November 22nd to 24th, with the preparation period on November 22nd and 23rd and the main festival on Monday, November 24th, the patron saint's day. As it is a fixed annual event, the program follows the established format.
