Cesate celebrates its patron saint Sant'Alessandro at the end of August
In the municipality of Cesate (Province of Milan, Lombardy), the Festa Patronale di Sant'Alessandro is the most important religious observance of the year. The patron saint, Sant'Alessandro the martyr — a figure linked to the devotional tradition of the Milanese and Bergamasco area — is celebrated at the end of August with a festival organised by the Comunità Pastorale San Paolo VI, which brings together the town's parishes in a single pastoral journey.
The heart of the festival is religious: the solemn Holy Mass opens the celebrations, followed by the Eucharistic celebration dedicated to the sick, a moment of particular attention towards the vulnerable members of the community. The torchlight procession (processione aux flambeaux), with its illuminated procession through the town's streets in the evening, is one of the most evocative and anticipated moments: a river of lights accompanying the image of the patron saint in an atmosphere of intense reflection.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the festival offers moments of meeting and conviviality, with refreshments, food stalls, and initiatives that continue until the following weekend. It is an occasion for the community of Cesate to come together around its patron saint and its traditions, in an event that, despite being on the outskirts of Milan and in the heart of the hinterland, retains the warmth, participation, and authenticity of village festivals of the past.
The 2026 edition of the Festa Patronale di Sant'Alessandro in Cesate takes place from August 26th to 31st, organised by the Comunità Pastorale San Paolo VI. The religious programme includes the Holy Mass on August 26th, the Eucharistic celebration with the sick on the 27th, and the torchlight procession (processione aux flambeaux) on August 31st. The festivities extend to the following weekend, with moments of conviviality and refreshments.
The festivities continue the following weekend. The detailed programme is published by the Comunità Pastorale San Paolo VI.
