The patron saint's festival in the village overlooking the Molise Adriatic coast
In Petacciato, a village overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the province of Campobasso, the Festa Patronale di San Rocco (Patron Saint Rocco's Festival) is the most cherished event of the summer. The saint of Montpellier, a pilgrim and protector against plagues, has been venerated here for centuries, and his festival, which falls on August 16th, draws emigrants, tourists, and faithful from neighbouring towns.
The celebrations begin with the novena, nine days of services that prepare for the solemnity. Two days before the festival, the women of the community create a large infiorata (flower carpet) in honour of the saint, a tapestry of petals that adorns the streets along the procession route.
On the festival day, the solemn Mass is celebrated, often presided over by the Bishop of the diocese, followed by the procession that carries the statue of San Rocco through the streets of the historic centre. Associations and confraternities parade and offer incense to the saint. In Petacciato, the festival also preserves the tradition of the Fucilieri (Musketeers), young men in festive attire who, according to a 19th-century custom, accompany solemn moments with blank shots.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival becomes an occasion for the entire community to gather: stalls selling sweets, concerts, shows in the piazza, and the unmissable final fireworks display that lights up the sky above the village and the sea. It is one of the moments when Petacciato best showcases its identity, blending devotion, hospitality, and typical Molise conviviality.
The 2026 edition of the Festa di San Rocco in Petacciato follows the traditional calendar: the novena opens the celebrations in the first half of August and culminates in the solemnity of August 16th. The distinctive features of the Petacciato festival remain confirmed: the flower carpet created by the village women, the solemn Mass with the procession of the saint's statue through the historic centre, the presence of the Fucilieri, and the final fireworks display.
The detailed religious and civil program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the parish and the festival committee in the weeks preceding August 16th. Usual structure of the celebrations:
