The patron saint's festival of Volongo

In Volongo, a municipality of just over four hundred inhabitants in the plain of the province of Cremona, in Lombardy, the patron saint's festival has always marked the autumn for the village. It is celebrated on the second Sunday of October in honour of San Pietro Martire, the patron saint of the village, and is inextricably linked to the devotion to the Madonna del Campanile.

The heart of the festival is the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, a building whose current form dates back to the second half of the 16th century, with extensions in the following two centuries. Inside, the chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Campanile is preserved, entirely frescoed and of considerable artistic value: local tradition recalls the apparition of the Virgin in the atrium of the bell tower, an event around which the village's devotion has been built over the centuries.

A village festival

Volongo's patron saint's festival retains the intimate and secluded character of the small centres of the Bassa Cremonese: religious celebrations in the parish, the community coming together, the bond with its own history and its own land. It is not a major tourist event, but one of those occasions that tell the deep identity of the villages in the Po Valley, where the patron saint's festival remains the most important moment of cohesion of the year.
