The feast of the patron saint in the village of the Monti Sibillini

Every year, on November 11th, the Municipality of Montefortino celebrates its patron saint, Saint Martin of Tours. The Festa patronale di San Martino is the most heartfelt devotional event in the village: a day when the entire community gathers around the figure of the saint, in a village perched among the peaks of the Monti Sibillini, in the province of Fermo, in the Marche region.
Montefortino is located in the Tenna river valley, within the Monti Sibillini National Park, dominated by imposing peaks such as Monte Priora, Monte Sibilla, and La Priora. Its historic centre, with its characteristic "cone" urban structure made of semicircular tiers of stone and brick houses rising towards the top of the hill, is a scene of rare charm. The ancient medieval gates โ Porta Santa Lucia, Porta San Biagio, and Porta della Valle โ lead into a maze of alleys that house churches, palaces, and the famous Fortunato Duranti Art Gallery, located in Palazzo Leopardi along with the Museum of Sacred Art and the Faunal Museum of the Sibillini.
The patronal feast combines the spiritual dimension with tradition. The central moment is represented by the liturgical celebrations in honour of Saint Martin, with the solemn Mass and the procession that winds through the heart of the village. The more convivial moments of the day develop around the rite, according to the ancient custom that links the feast of Saint Martin to autumn and its fruits.
In the Marche region, as in much of Italy, November 11th is the date celebrated by the proverb with the famous saying: ยซA San Martino ogni mosto diventa vinoยป (At Saint Martin's, all must becomes wine). The feast coincides with the opening of the barrels and the tasting of the new wine, accompanied by the typical flavours of the season โ chestnuts, forest products, and specialities of Sibillini cuisine. It is the period of the so-called "St. Martin's summer", the short, mild days preceding winter which, in peasant tradition, marked a time of rest and conviviality.
The Festa patronale di San Martino is the ideal opportunity to discover Montefortino in its most authentic guise, far from the summer tourist crowds. An experience that allows you to experience the spirituality and warmth of a small mountain community up close, to wander through the alleys of one of the most characteristic villages of the Fermo Apennines, and to savour the intimate atmosphere of the Marche autumn.
The 2026 edition of the Festa patronale di San Martino in Montefortino is expected on Wednesday, November 11th, 2026, the date that falls every year in the liturgical calendar in honour of Saint Martin of Tours, patron saint of the Fermo village. The day includes, according to custom, the solemn Mass and the procession in the historic centre, along with convivial moments linked to the autumn tradition of the Sibillini.
Currently, the official programme with times and events has not yet been released. It is advisable to check for updates with the Municipality of Montefortino and the local parish closer to the date.
