Devotion and the ritual of the 'ballo delle gregne'
San Gaetano da Thiene is the patron saint of Calvera, a small village in the Province of Potenza nestled in the Lucanian Pollino area. The saint's cult, that of a noble from Vicenza and founder of the Order of Theatines, was likely brought to the village by San Severino between the 16th and 17th centuries, and since then the community has celebrated him annually on August 7th.
The most characteristic moment of the festival is the 'ballo delle gregne'. The 'gregne' are light wooden structures covered with wheat ears — preferably of the Carosella variety — often decorated with candles, the result of a vow by the faithful. During the procession, the women of the village carry the 'gregne' behind the saint and, upon reaching the square, make them dance to the rhythm of popular music in front of the patron saint. Some have even carried them barefoot to fulfill a promise.
The 'ballo delle gregne' is an expression of ancient peasant spirituality, where religious devotion merges with the popular festival in a single, intense moment of community. It is a ritual that links gratitude for the wheat harvest with the saint's protection, preserving a tradition passed down through generations.
Participating in the San Gaetano festival means immersing yourself in the authenticity of deepest Basilicata, amidst the landscapes of the Pollino National Park, the hospitality of the village, and the strength of a tradition that endures over time, carefully preserved by the Pro Loco of Calvera.
For 2026, the community of Calvera will celebrate its patron saint San Gaetano da Thiene on the usual date of August 7th. The day, organized with the Pro Loco of Calvera, includes liturgical celebrations, the procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets, and the evocative 'ballo delle gregne', the highlight of the village tradition.
The detailed program, with the times for Mass and procession, will be released by the parish and the Pro Loco in the weeks prior.
Detailed times will be announced in the coming weeks.
