The festival of the patron saint of Casei Gerola, featuring cycling, autumn flavours, and tradition
The Festa Patronale di San Fortunato is the most anticipated autumn event in Casei Gerola, a municipality in the Province of Pavia located in the lower Oltrepò plain, close to the Po river and the border with Piedmont. Traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of October, the festival intertwines religious celebrations in honour of the patron saint with a rich civil programme that enlivens Piazza Meardi and the town centre for three days.
Among the most deep-rooted events is the Circuito Casellese, a cycling race now in its thirtieth edition, dedicated to the memory of historical figures in local cycling. The race, which winds through the town's streets, attracts enthusiasts and athletes of various categories and is one of the moments that best illustrates Casei Gerola's connection with the world of two wheels.
The festival is also an occasion for the entire community to come together: the exhibition of artisan creations, the 'Sapori d'autunno' dinner with live music, roasted chestnuts prepared by the Gruppo Alpini (Alpine Group), entertainment for children, a charity raffle, and the funfair rides accompany the days. There is also the presentation of civic honours, a sign of the town's appreciation for those who have distinguished themselves in service to the community.
The most solemn moment is Sunday morning, with the Mass in honour of San Fortunato and the procession of the saint through the village streets, accompanied by the brass band. A ritual that renews Casei Gerola's identity each year and gives the deepest meaning to a festival that successfully combines devotion and popular joy.
The 2026 edition of the Festa Patronale di San Fortunato will take place in Casei Gerola around the third Sunday of October, maintaining the traditional structure spread over Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The programme alternates between sports – with the historic Circuito Casellese cycling race – community moments (exhibition of artisan creations, Sapori d'autunno dinner, roasted chestnuts, children's entertainment, charity raffle, and funfair) and religious celebrations, culminating in the solemn Mass and the procession of the patron saint.
The detailed 2026 programme will be published by the Municipality of Casei Gerola in the weeks preceding the event. Based on recent editions, the traditional structure is as follows:
