The Marian vow of blessed rye bread on the day of the Assumption
The Festa di Sant'Eusebio with the Benedisiu del Toc is one of the most evocative traditions of Berzo Demo, a municipality in Valle Camonica in the Province of Brescia. The festival takes place on August 15th, the day of the Assumption, and is rooted in a Marian vow: according to local tradition, the inhabitants attribute the protection of the village from a landslide originating from Doss de l'Ora to an intervention by the Madonna. Since then, each family has offered rye bread as a thank you.
The heart of the festival is precisely the blessing of the Toc: the pieces of rye bread are gathered on the parvis of the church of Sant'Eusebio, blessed during the Eucharistic celebration, and then distributed to participants. The rite is accompanied by a procession through the village streets and the blessing of bread and wine, in an intertwining of devotion and material culture that speaks of the village's agricultural history.
Berzo Demo was historically characterized by rye cultivation and vineyards, and rye is the common thread of this festival. After a period of abandonment, its cultivation has spread again in recent years, giving meaning and relevance to a rite that celebrates the bond between the community, the land, and faith. Above the village, the Poggio della Croce holds the commemorative cross of the vow to the Madonna.
On August 15, 2026, Berzo Demo renews the Benedisiu del Toc.
