The neighbourhood festival of the Castello district around San Giovanni Battista
The Festa di San Giovanni in Bragora takes place in one of the most authentic corners of Venice, in the Castello district, around Campo Bandiera e Moro (also known as Campo della Bragora) and the church of the same name, a jewel where the composer Antonio Vivaldi was baptised. The festival celebrates San Giovanni Battista, remembered on 24 June, in one of the oldest anniversaries in the city's popular calendar.
Organised by the neighbourhood committee in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice, the festival offers recreational occasions linked to tradition: music, open-air cinema screenings, cultural activities, and moments of conviviality. Among the historic initiatives is also the "bochaleri" race along the Riva degli Schiavoni. It is a festival designed primarily for the residents of the district, who experience it as a community event.
The festival of San Giovanni Battista has been linked for centuries to popular rites and beliefs, from the summer solstice to magical herbs. In Venice, this heritage lives on in the events in Castello, in a district that has managed to preserve its character as a village within the city. An opportunity to discover a different Venice, made up of lived-in squares and neighbourhood traditions.
The Festa di San Giovanni in Bragora 2026 returns in June to the Castello district, around the anniversary of San Giovanni Battista (June 24th). As tradition dictates, the neighbourhood committee and the Municipality of Venice will liven up Campo Bandiera e Moro with music, cinema, and cultural and popular activities for residents.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition, with the exact dates and times of the musical events, cinema screenings, and neighbourhood activities, will be announced by the neighbourhood committee and the Municipality of Venice in the weeks preceding the festival. The event traditionally takes place at Campo Bandiera e Moro in the Castello district, around the anniversary of San Giovanni Battista on June 24th.
By train to Venezia Santa Lucia, then take the ACTV vaporetto to the San Zaccaria or Arsenale stops; Campo Bandiera e Moro is a few minutes' walk away in the Castello district.
This is a free-entry neighbourhood festival. The programme with dates and times of events is released by the neighbourhood committee and the Municipality of Venice in the weeks preceding the festival.
