About Festa della Forgiatura

Every August, in the historic center of Frosolone, the Festa della Forgiatura revives the ancient art of blacksmithing, for which this village in the Isernia area is famous throughout Italy, amidst sparks and the ringing of anvils. A real artisan workshop is recreated in the square, and master cutlers demonstrate live, step by step, how a blade is made: from the forging of Damascus steel to the finished cut. An event that intertwines memory, craft, and the identity of a town that has been working with steel for centuries.

The festival that tells the soul of Frosolone

In Frosolone, a small village in the province of Isernia in Molise, steelworking is not just any craft: it is the very identity of the town. Known as the "Italian Toledo," Frosolone is the only center in Southern Italy specializing in the production of knives and scissors, with a tradition that scholars believe dates back to the Lombard era. The Festa della Forgiatura is the moment when this heritage leaves the workshops and is showcased to the public.

The forge in the square

During the event, a real cutler's workshop is recreated in the heart of the historic center according to ancient tradition. Master artisans reproduce live all the phases of the work: forging the iron, creating the Damascus steel bars from which the blades are made, tempering, and grinding. Amidst the glow of the forge and the rhythmic sound of the anvil, visitors witness ancient gestures that have retained their charm.

A calendar of artisan events

The Festa della Forgiatura is part of Frosolone's rich summer program, closely linked to the National Exhibition Market of Scissors and Knives (Lam'Arte), which every August transforms the village alleys into a showcase of cutler excellence, and to the other local festivals. Together, they make up an August entirely dedicated to artisan know-how and the culture of art blades.

Why it's worth the trip

Few places in Italy still allow you to see a blade forged using age-old techniques. In Frosolone, this craft is alive, preserved by masters who pass it down from generation to generation. The Festa della Forgiatura is an opportunity to experience firsthand one of the rarest artisan heritages in Southern Italy.

Festa della Forgiatura — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Festa della Forgiatura is scheduled for August 12th, in the heart of Frosolone's artisan August, alongside the National Exhibition Market of Scissors and Knives.

The Festa della Forgiatura 2026 takes place on August 12th in the historic center of Frosolone. This year again, in the square, master cutlers will recreate a traditional workshop and demonstrate live the forging of blades, from the Damascus steel bar to the finished cut. The event is held concurrently with the National Exhibition Market of Scissors and Knives (Lam'Arte), which enlivens the entire village during the same days.
