On the last Sunday of June, the village of Gandosso, in the province of Bergamo, celebrates the Festa del Sacro Cuore in the hamlet of Gandosso Basso. It is a time when the entire population of the village gathers in honour of the Sacred Heart, housed in the little church that Don Beretta had built in the 1950s.

A tradition that changes date

The festival has a peculiar history: it was historically celebrated at the end of January, as a farewell to emigrants leaving after the Christmas holidays. Over time, the commemoration has moved to the last Sunday of June, a more favourable period for gathering the community and welcoming those who return to the village during the summer months.
