The Renaissance returns to Gradoli

Every summer, on a July evening, the village of Gradoli, in the province of Viterbo (Lazio), sheds its modern skin to don the attire of the 16th century. The Festa alla Corte dei Farnese is a historical re-enactment born from the deep bond between this Alta Tuscia town and the Farnese family, who held one of their most beloved residences here.

The historic center, with its stone alleys and arches, becomes the natural stage for a carefully reconstructed Renaissance court—not a mere backdrop, but an entire village coming to life.

What to expect

The format, perfected over more than a decade, blends entertainment with conviviality:

• Period markets along the town streets, featuring artisans, ancient crafts, and traditional products;
• Costumed musicians and street performers who accompany visitors from square to square;
• Crossbowmen and flag-wavers, with weapons demonstrations and flags animating the main squares;
• Taverns and inns serving period food and drinks, hosted by staff in Renaissance attire;
• Guided tours of Palazzo Farnese with costumed animation, one of the most popular highlights of the evening.

Palazzo Farnese and the Museum of Farnese Costume

The Palazzo Farnese in Gradoli was built between 1513 and 1517 to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and served as a summer residence for the Farnese family, particularly Pope Paul III. Today, it houses the Museum of Farnese Costume, a collection of noble, popular, and ecclesiastical garments, as well as Renaissance-era weapons and armor, all faithfully reproduced from period paintings, prints, and artworks. Alongside the clothing, visitors will find archival documents, 16th-century ceramics, a 19th-century loom, and wool-processing tools.

During the festival, the palace is more than just a museum; it is the symbolic hub of the evening, the place where the re-enactment finds its historical justification.

The village and Lake Bolsena

Gradoli overlooks the northwestern shore of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. It is a town of a few thousand inhabitants, known for its Aleatico di Gradoli DOC wine—a sweet, aromatic red celebrated annually at a festival between late July and early August—and for the famous Pranzo del Purgatorio (Purgatory Lunch) on Ash Wednesday, featuring its traditional purgatory beans.
