The historic fair and patronal feast of July in Alvignano
The Feast of San Ferdinando d'Aragona is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Alvignano, a town in the Alto Casertano area in the province of Caserta, Campania. San Ferdinando, bishop of the ancient diocese of Caiazzo who lived around the 11th century, is venerated as the patron saint by both Alvignano and the nearby community of Dragoni: his relics and bust are kept in the mother church of San Sebastiano Martire. It is the town's second patronal feast of the year, following the one dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.
The July celebration is closely linked to the so-called "fair festival." According to tradition, it was Alfonso I of Aragon who established a market in honor of the saint in 1443, due to his particular devotion. Born as a large livestock and agricultural tool fair, held at the end of the harvest, the event has accompanied the local rural economy for centuries. Today, the sale of the cipolla alifanaโa typical and exclusive product of this part of the Alife plain, brought to the stalls by the traditional "cannavinari"โis the main remnant of that ancient market.
The festivities open with a triduum of preparation: three evenings of religious celebrations in the church of San Sebastiano Martire, with the various parish communities of Alvignano and Dragoni taking turns animating the Holy Masses. The highlight is the Sunday of the solemnity, featuring an inter-parish Mass presided over by the Bishop and the solemn procession of the patron saint's bust and relics through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by ancient hymns, prayers, and the participation of civil and military authorities.
Alongside the religious program, the festival also features a civil side with music and entertainment evenings that enliven the town and involve the younger generations. It is an opportunity to gather in the square, rediscover an ancient community memory, and experience a strong sense of identity for the entire Alto Casertano territory.
The triduum opened on Thursday, July 9, 2026, and continued until Saturday, July 11, with evening Holy Masses at 7:00 PM in the church of San Sebastiano Martire, animated in turn by the parish communities of Dragoni, Saints Peter and Paul, Santa Maria del Carmine, San Nicola, and San Sebastiano.
The solemnity, on Sunday, July 12, featured morning Masses and the solemn evening inter-parish celebration presided over by Bishop Giacomo Cirulli, followed by the procession of the bust and relics of San Ferdinando through the streets of Alvignano. On the civil side, the festival offered entertainment evenings, culminating in the 90s-themed event "Crazy 90s". As per tradition, the fair with the sale of the cipolla alifana was also held.

Alvignano can be reached by car from the Caianello or Capua exits of the A1 motorway, continuing along the roads of the Alto Casertano. By train, the nearest reference stations are those on the line for Caserta and the Alife-Piedimonte Matese area.
Religious celebrations and the procession are free to attend. The fair and stalls take place in the town center.
Don't miss the chance to buy the cipolla alifana, a typical local product. It is advisable to check the times of services and evening events with the parish and the festival committee.
