About Saints Peter and Paul

Every June 29, Rome comes to a standstill to honor its patron saints, Peter and Paul. The day blends the religious solemnity of celebrations at St. Peter's and the Pantheon with the ephemeral art of the Infiorata, which covers Via della Conciliazione and St. Peter's Square in floral carpets created overnight by master florists from Italy's Pro Loco associations. The day concludes with the Girandola at Castel Sant'Angelo, a pyrotechnic display documented since 1481 that lights up the sky over the Tiber at 9:30 PM. It is a completely free city festival, rooted in devotion, popular tradition, and Baroque wonder.

The feast of Rome's patron saints

June 29 is the most defining date on the Roman calendar: the city celebrates Saints Peter and Paul, its patron saints, with a festival that spans the Borgo district, the Vatican, and the banks of the Tiber. It is a festival of the people even more than a tourist event, deeply rooted in the history of the Municipality of Rome and recognized as a city holiday—the only one in the entire Lazio region to hold this status.

Religious celebrations

The morning begins at St. Peter's Basilica with Holy Mass and the imposition of the pallium on new Metropolitan Archbishops, while a mass dedicated to the two apostles is held at the Pantheon. The tradition preserves ancient rites: the kissing of the foot of the bronze statue of St. Peter, dressed for the occasion in red vestments, and the procession with the relic of St. Paul's chains. These celebrations are complemented by urban pilgrimage routes connecting the city's apostolic sites, from San Pietro in Vincoli to St. Paul Outside the Walls.

The Infiorata of Via della Conciliazione

The visual heart of the festival is the Infiorata. On the late afternoon of June 28, dozens of Pro Loco associations from all over Italy gather along Via della Conciliazione and the edges of St. Peter's Square, working through the night to compose floral carpets and tableaux. The materials are traditional: fresh and dried petals, wood shavings, sand, salt, sugar, fruit, and other natural elements. Each composition tells a story, a devotion, or a distinctive feature of its region of origin, turning the street into an open-air gallery of Italian ephemeral art.

The official blessing and inauguration take place at 10:00 AM on June 29, followed by the presentation of awards to the delegations; the carpets remain on public display until late in the evening. The initiative is promoted by UNPLI together with the Pro Loco of Rome Capital and is free of charge.

The Girandola of Castel Sant'Angelo

As evening falls, the festivities move to the Tiber. At 9:30 PM, Castel Sant'Angelo hosts the Girandola, a pyrotechnic show documented as early as 1481 and linked for centuries to the most solemn celebrations of papal Rome: tradition credits Michelangelo Buonarroti and Gian Lorenzo Bernini among its early creators. Suspended in the late 19th century, the Girandola has returned to light up the capital's sky since 2008, thanks to the Directorate of National Museums of the City of Rome and the National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo, with the historical re-enactment curated by Giuseppe Passeri and the Gruppo IX INVICTA & Co.

  • Duration: approximately twenty minutes of fireworks over the Mole Adriana
  • Viewing points: Lungotevere Tor di Nona, Ponte Sant'Angelo, Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II, and Ponte Umberto I
  • Panoramic alternatives: the Janiculum Hill and the highest points around Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese

Atmosphere and tips

The day has a rhythm all its own: a quiet, liturgical morning, an afternoon dedicated to strolling along the flower-covered carpets of the Borgo, and a festive, crowded evening on the bridges. Those who want the full experience can start early, when the low light enhances the colors of the Infiorata, and save the evening for the Girandola. In the streets of the Borgo and Prati districts, trattorias serve classic Roman cuisine, from oxtail stew to supplì, perfect for a break between the two events.

Why it's worth the trip

Few cities manage to combine a thousand-year-old liturgy, popular art like the Infiorata, and a Renaissance-style fireworks display in a single day. The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul is exactly that: the most sincere portrait of Rome, where the sacred and the street festival never exclude one another.

Saints Peter and Paul — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Rome's patron saint festival brought together the celebrations at St. Peter's and the Pantheon on June 29, the 13th Infiorata of the Pro Loco of Italy on Via della Conciliazione and St. Peter's Square, and the Girandola at Castel Sant'Angelo at 9:30 PM. The theme chosen for the floral carpets was "Towards a disarmed and disarming peace," interpreted by 26 associations from ten Italian regions.

A day of flowers and fireworks

2026 confirmed the well-established structure of the festival: the night of ephemeral art, the liturgical morning, and the pyrotechnic evening. Master florists worked from the late afternoon of June 28 until dawn, delivering to the city a floral path that accompanied pilgrims to Bernini's colonnade. In the evening, the Girandola concluded the day with about twenty minutes of fireworks over the Mole Adriana, followed by a dense crowd on the riverbanks and bridges.

The area around Castel Sant'Angelo is closed to traffic in the late afternoon, so it is best to travel on foot or by public transport and reach the bridges at least an hour before 9:30 PM. For the Infiorata, the colors are at their best in the early morning, immediately after the 10:00 AM blessing.

Where to stay

The Borgo district and the Prati neighborhood offer the most convenient accommodation, but any area served by Metro line A allows easy access to both events.
