About Feast of Saint Vitus

Every year in mid-June, Sapri comes to a standstill for its patron saint: the Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the heart of the identity of this city overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. From the Mother Church of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Plebiscito, the procession carries the statues of Saint Vitus, the Immaculate Conception, and Saint Anthony of Padua through the streets, led by the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint. Three days of religious celebrations, brass band concerts, Neapolitan music, and fireworks illuminate the bay.

A city that stops for its patron saint

June 15th is no ordinary day in Sapri. In this town on the Gulf of Policastro, at the southern tip of the province of Salerno and Campania, just a few kilometers from the border with Basilicata, the Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is a blend of religious rite, civic event, and collective memory. The Municipality of Sapri offices remain closed for the patronal solemnity, families who have moved away return for the occasion, and the center fills with lights, market stalls, and music. It is the most heartfelt celebration of the year, marking the beginning of summer in Sapri.

The procession of the three statues

The heart of the festivities is the late afternoon procession on June 15th, departing from the Mother Church of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza Plebiscito. It is not just one effigy that emerges, but three: Saint Vitus the Martyr, the Immaculate Virgin, and Saint Anthony of Padua travel together through the city streets, accompanied by hundreds of faithful, religious chants, and the local band. The parade begins with a highly anticipated gesture: the handing over of the city keys to the Patron Saint by the Mayor, a symbolic act entrusting Sapri to the protection of Saint Vitus for the coming year.

Children dressed in the Saint’s habit walk along the route, while the faithful are asked to wear something red, the color of martyrdom. The procession also touches the seaside village of Marinella, which is decorated for the occasion and hosts a blessing at the well before returning to the square for the final benediction.

Morning rites: wheat ears and blessings

The solemn day begins very early. Eucharistic celebrations follow one another from the morning, culminating in the noon Mass, which concludes with the blessing and distribution of wheat ears—a gesture linking the festival to the farming world and the harvest season—and the blessing of the dogs, a popular devotional rite of strong identity, alongside the blessing of the youth. These are simple, deeply participated moments that explain better than any description why this festival is not just folklore, but a living heritage of the community.

Brass bands, Neapolitan music, and fireworks over the sea

Alongside the religious dimension, the civic one has always thrived. Every year, a grand brass band concert in the best southern tradition takes the stage in Piazza Plebiscito: in recent years, ensembles such as the «Città di Fisciano» and «Città di Conversano» bands have performed, with lyrical-symphonic programs that attract large audiences even from neighboring towns.

The final evening, June 16th, is dedicated to popular and Neapolitan singer-songwriter music—the stage has hosted the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare, Andrea Sannino, and Angelo Famao—and concludes with a fireworks display that lights up the sea of the Sapri bay. It is the image everyone takes home: the fireworks reflecting on the waters of the Gulf of Policastro, with the promenade packed with people.

Saint Vitus and the identity of Sapri

Sapri is known as the city of the Gleaner (città della Spigolatrice), due to the famous poem linked to the 1857 expedition of Carlo Pisacane, and by a singular coincidence, that reference to wheat returns in the rite of distributing blessed grain. The cult of Saint Vitus, a young martyr venerated throughout Southern Italy, has been documented in the city for centuries and centers on the Church of the Immaculate, the historic parish overlooking Piazza Plebiscito. For the people of Sapri, June 15th is as significant as a civic New Year: it is a time to return, to meet, and to renew the pact between the community and its protector.

What to expect if you are visiting

  • Atmosphere: very popular and familiar, with a strong devotional component; the historic center and the promenade are closed to traffic during the procession hours.
  • Duration: three days, with June 15th as the true focal point and the 16th dedicated to the concert and fireworks.
  • Costs: all events, both religious and musical, are free to attend.
  • Extras: market stalls, illuminations, and food stands along the center streets, featuring typical products of the Cilento and Gulf of Policastro area.

Those visiting Sapri during these days will find a seaside resort at its most authentic, before the peak of the tourist season: a great opportunity to combine the sea, tradition, and Campanian folk culture.
