About Saint Sebastian Barano

Every year, around January 20th, Barano d'Ischia celebrates Saint Sebastian the Martyr, the patron saint of the municipality. Following a novena of spiritual preparation, the town experiences days of intense popular devotion, featuring a penitential walk, a solemn holy mass, and a procession of the saint's statue accompanied by a marching band. The festivities culminate on January 20th with a fireworks display, honoring a centuries-old tradition that coexists with the veneration of the island's other patron, Saint Roch.

The patronal feast of Barano d'Ischia

The Feast of Saint Sebastian the Martyr is the primary religious celebration of the Municipality of Barano d'Ischia, located in the Province of Naples, in the heart of the Campania islands. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of the entire municipality, while Saint Roch is traditionally venerated as the protector of the town center: two devotions that coexist overlooking the central Piazza San Rocco, where the two 17th-century churches dedicated to the saints stand. The solemnity falls on January 20th and concludes a cycle of celebrations involving the entire Barano community.

The figure of the saint

According to tradition, Saint Sebastian was an officer of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Diocletian who secretly helped persecuted Christians. Upon being discovered, he was sentenced to death and pierced by arrows, becoming one of the most venerated martyrs in Christianity. He is considered the protector of soldiers and, together with Saint Roch, of the sick and plague victims. In Barano, his cult is deeply rooted in history and continues to attract authentic and heartfelt participation today.

The church and the square

The heart of the celebrations is the Church of Saint Sebastian, whose origins date back to 1604, when a convent was built next to a pre-existing place of worship. The church, featuring three naves with a Latin cross layout and a barrel vault, houses valuable works of art and is one of the town's most iconic landmarks. From here, on January 20th, the procession begins, winding through the streets of the municipality.

The festival program

The festivities follow an established devotional pattern:

  • The Novena: in the nine days preceding the solemnity (starting January 11th), the faithful gather for preparatory prayer.
  • The Penitential Walk: a moment of deep popular spirituality, where devotees follow the traditional path in honor of the saint.
  • The Solemn Holy Mass: celebrated on the day of the feast in the parish church.
  • The Procession: the statue of Saint Sebastian is carried on shoulders through the town streets, accompanied by a marching band.
  • Fireworks: on the evening of January 20th, fireworks bring the solemn day to a festive close.

A tradition of Ischia island

The Feast of Saint Sebastian is part of the rich calendar of religious festivals on the island of Ischia, where every district and municipality preserves its own patron saint and customs. In Barano, the event represents a winter appointment that unites faith, music, and community, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the popular culture and traditions of the 'Green Island'.
