The feast of Neviano's co-patron saint in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Neviano, a village of just over five thousand inhabitants in the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce, September 29th is a deeply felt date: it is the day of Saint Michael the Archangel, co-patron of the town along with Our Lady of the Snows, who is celebrated on August 5th. The warrior saint is the namesake of the Mother Church, an imposing 19th-century neoclassical building that dominates the historic center and houses the statue venerated by the locals.
The September festival has a more intimate character compared to the grand summer celebrations for Our Lady of the Snows: it falls in the middle of the grape harvest, a season of intense work for a town historically tied to the countryside and olive groves. For this reason, the occasion retains a strong sense of identity, experienced as a moment of reflection and gathering for the community. The celebration revolves around the novena and the solemn liturgy in honor of the Archangel at the Mother Church, with the participation of the faithful and traditional devotion to the town's protector.
Alongside the religious dimension, in recent years the date of September 29th has also been enhanced by cultural initiatives promoted by the Municipality of Neviano and local associations, with events in Piazza Concordia and throughout the historic center, dedicated to memory, folk traditions, and music. The organization of the civil festivities is entrusted to the Madonna della Neve - Saint Michael the Archangel Festival Committee, which collects contributions from the residents each year for illuminations, the band, and social gatherings.
Located between Galatina and Casarano, in the southern Salento of Puglia, Neviano offers visitors the Mother Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows linked to an ancient legend, and the remains of the Orsini del Balzo Baronial Castle. The feast of the co-patron is an opportunity to discover an authentic village, its cuisine featuring orecchiette with turnip tops, taralli, and local olive oil, and the simple hospitality of the Lecce province.
