The patronal feast of Casalvieri

In the heart of the Ciociaria region, the town of Casalvieri, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), dedicates its most cherished festival every year to Saint Honorius the Martyr, the town's patron saint. The appointment is set, as tradition dictates, for the last Sunday of May: a moment when the entire community gathers around its Saint, amidst religious devotion and shared roots.

Who was Saint Honorius

Saint Honorius is venerated as a young Roman soldier who was martyred for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. His example of courage lies at the heart of the festival's spirituality: the Saint's relics, kept in an Urn, are displayed to the faithful during the days of celebration, in a ritual that renews the bond between the town and its protector year after year.

Faith, tradition, and roots

The feast of Saint Honorius is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the day when Casalvieri rediscovers its identity. Preparation begins with a novena that involves the various districts of the town, journeying toward the main church. A special role is reserved for emigrants: many Casalvieri natives living far away return for the occasion, and a Holy Mass and the laying of a wreath at the War Memorial are dedicated specifically to them.

The procession

The highlight is the Sunday procession, when the statue of the Patron Saint is carried through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful in a prayerful walk. Holy Masses follow one another from morning to evening, marking a day entirely dedicated to the Saint.

The August 17th encore

Since 2013, the festivities have also been renewed on August 17th in Piazza San Rocco, as part of the Casalvieri Summer program. It is a second appointment designed for emigrants who return during the summer, featuring a new opening of the Urn: a way to maintain the thread that connects those who have left with their land of origin.
