Faith, tradition, and music in Sicily's highest village
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua and White Night is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Floresta, Sicily's highest village, nestled at an altitude of over 1,200 meters in the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, in the Province of Messina. Every June 13th, the day dedicated to the Saint of Padua, the small mountain hamlet comes alive with faith, tradition, and popular celebration, welcoming residents and visitors from surrounding towns.
The festival is deeply rooted in religious devotion: celebrations are preceded by a nine-day novena that leads the community up to the eve of the feast. The spiritual heart of the day is the procession that winds through the village streets, followed by a solemn Holy Mass in the church dedicated to Saint Anthony, located on the western side of the town.
As evening falls, devotion gives way to celebration: the White Night begins, with the opening of taste huts dedicated to the region's typical products. The Nebrodi area is renowned for its livestock and culinary excellence, from provola cheese to local meats, and the festival is the perfect opportunity to sample these specialties. One of the most anticipated events is the show cooking session hosted by the Provincial Chefs Association, which brings the art of local cuisine to the main square.
The evening culminates with a grand concert in Piazza Umberto I, the hub of village life, and a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the Nebrodi sky at midnight. The festival, a collaborative effort between the Festival Committee, the Municipal Council, and numerous volunteers, represents a significant moment of faith, social gathering, and promotion of the mountain territory.
Visiting Floresta during the Feast of Saint Anthony means discovering an authentic village in the Sicilian hinterland, where crisp mountain air, popular traditions, and the warm hospitality of the community blend into a unique experience. It is a chance to discover the lesser-known, mountainous side of Sicily, far from the beaten tourist paths.
The 2026 edition opened in the morning with the arrival of the "V. Bellini" brass band from Sinagra and the collection of offerings. At 4:00 PM, the procession wound through the village streets, concluding with Holy Mass.
At 7:00 PM, the auction of gifts began, along with the opening of the taste huts featuring typical Nebrodi products and the start of the White Night. The evening featured a show cooking session by the Provincial Chefs Association and, at 10:00 PM in Piazza Umberto I, a concert by the singer Banfy with his hit "Bam Bam". At midnight, the sky over Floresta was illuminated by a fireworks display.
Mayor Antonio Stroscio described the event as the result of teamwork between the Festival Committee, the Municipal Council, councilors, and volunteers—a great moment of faith, tradition, and community that attracted visitors from neighboring towns.
Floresta can be reached by car via the SS116 road, which crosses the Nebrodi Mountains, connecting the Tyrrhenian coast (Capo d'Orlando, Naso) with the Ionian side. From the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the exit for Brolo or Sant'Agata di Militello and continue inland. The village is located at an altitude of over 1,200 meters: warm clothing is recommended, even on summer evenings.
The festival takes place on June 13th, the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, with the White Night continuing late into the evening.
Access to religious celebrations, the White Night, and the concert in the square is free.
