A spring religious festival in Morino, in the heart of the Valle Roveto
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel and Saint Anthony the Abbot is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in Morino, a small village of just under 1,500 inhabitants nestled in the center of the Valle Roveto, in the Marsica region of the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo). Every year, around the end of April, the town gathers around two figures dear to local devotion: Our Lady of Good Counsel, invoked as a protector and guide, and Saint Anthony the Abbot, the traditional patron saint of the farming world and animals. The festival thus unites two deeply popular cults in a single spring celebration.
The heart of the festival is liturgical. The two days are marked by Eucharistic celebrations in the village church and the solemn procession that winds through the streets of Morino's historic center, accompanied by the faithful and, in standard editions, by a marching band playing traditional marches. Marian devotion in Morino has its roots in the religious history of the valley, marked since the Middle Ages by the presence of Cassinese monks who spread the cult of the Virgin throughout the area, as evidenced by the rock hermitage of Santa Maria del Cauto, a destination for pilgrimages.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival retains the joyful character of Abruzzese village fairs. In full editions, the program includes musical evenings with singers and live performances, entertainment for the town, and, to conclude the festivities, a fireworks display that lights up the sky over the Valle Roveto. It is an occasion when the entire community of Morino, along with those returning to the village for the event, gathers in the squares and along the streets of the hamlet.
Organization is entrusted to the Morino Festival Committee, which collects offerings from the faithful and coordinates the various moments of the event. The festival is a defining appointment for the Municipality of Morino and the entire Valle Roveto, one of those village rites that, from generation to generation, keep the memory and bond with the territory alive.
Morino is not just about festivals and devotion: the village houses the evocative Zompo lo Schioppo Nature Reserve, featuring one of the highest natural waterfalls in the Apennines, and preserves the traces of Morino Vecchio, the ancient settlement destroyed by the 1915 Marsica earthquake. Participating in the spring festival therefore also means discovering an authentic corner of mountainous Abruzzo, amidst religious tradition, Apennine landscapes, and village hospitality.
The Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel and Saint Anthony the Abbot will return to Morino, in the heart of the Valle Roveto (province of L'Aquila), presumably towards the end of April 2026, in accordance with local custom. At the moment, the Morino Festival Committee has not yet announced the official dates or the detailed program for the 2026 edition.
As is tradition, the program will include liturgical celebrations and the solemn procession through the streets of the historic center; in standard editions, this is joined by a marching band, evening entertainment, and a final fireworks display. It is recommended to check for dates and events on the channels of the Municipality of Morino and the Festival Committee as the event approaches.
Morino is located in the Valle Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached from the A24/A25 motorway (Avezzano exit), continuing along the Valle Roveto towards the south, or from the dual carriageway connecting Avezzano to Sora. The reference railway station is on the Avezzano-Roccasecca line.
The festival traditionally takes place towards the end of April, spanning two days. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check with the Municipality of Morino or the Festival Committee's social media page.
Participation in the rites and festivities is free and open to all.
