The patronal festival of Balsorano, blending faith, tradition, and major concerts in Piazza Scacchi

The Balsorano Patronal Festival, also known as the Balsorano Summer, is the most cherished summer event in the municipality of Balsorano, a village in the Valle Roveto in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. The festival stems from popular devotion to the town's patron saints and is managed by the San Giorgio & SS.ma Trinità Committee, which gathers the efforts of volunteers every year to organize both the religious and secular programs.
Celebrations are held in honor of Saint George, the Holy Trinity, Saint Francis, Saint Anthony, and Saint Emidius. Alongside the entertainment, religious services, Holy Masses, and processions through the town streets remain central, expressing a tradition that weaves together faith and community identity. Balsorano's devotion is also linked to the cult of Mary Most Holy of the Assumption, whose statue is traditionally carried from the old town to the new town during the days of August.
The beating heart of the festival is Piazza Scacchi, which transforms into a large open-air stage for several evenings. Over the years, the event has hosted musical shows and concerts by well-known Italian artists with free admission, along with the unmissable fireworks that accompany the most anticipated nights. The free-entry format and the variety of offerings, from live music to traveling shows, make the festival a moment of gathering for the entire Valle Roveto.
Like many Abruzzese patronal festivals, the Balsorano Summer is above all an occasion for reunion: villagers, families, and emigrants return to the village to share evenings of music, illuminations, and traditional flavors. The festival represents an important piece of the summer calendar in the Marsica region and the province of L'Aquila, capable of uniting religious reflection with the joy of a town square celebration.
The Balsorano Patronal Festival returns in the summer of 2026 to Piazza Scacchi, in the municipality of Balsorano (AQ), in the Valle Roveto. As is customary, the festival will take place in the month of August, with religious services in honor of Saint George, the Holy Trinity, and the other patron saints, along with the usual secular program of free concerts and shows.
The official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the San Giorgio & SS.ma Trinità Committee. The calendar and the names of the artists will be communicated in the weeks leading up to the event: this page will be updated as soon as the program is made public.
The main events are held in Piazza Scacchi, in the center of Balsorano (AQ), in the Valle Roveto. Religious moments take place in the town's churches.
By car: Balsorano can be reached from the A1 motorway (nearest exits towards Valle Roveto) and the SS690 Avezzano-Sora highway. By train: the Avezzano-Roccasecca line serves the Balsorano station.
Concerts and shows in Piazza Scacchi are generally free of charge.
