The Marian patronal feast of the Norman Sanctuary in Giarre, blending faith, processions, and popular tradition.
In the municipality of Giarre, within the Metropolitan City of Catania, the district of Santa Maria La Strada preserves one of the most heartfelt Marian devotions on the Ionian-Etna side. The Feast of Maria SS. della Strada revolves around the eponymous diocesan Sanctuary and attracts faithful, pilgrims, and visitors from neighboring towns every May.
According to tradition, the sanctuary was commissioned by Count Roger I in the 11th century. It is said that the Norman leader, on his way back to Calabria, invoked the Madonna's help to escape a Saracen ambush: suddenly, "the sound of trumpets and the galloping of an army of knights in white uniforms" was heard, putting the attackers to flight. This miracle is said to be the origin of the name "Santa Maria la Strada." The building, of Norman design, dates back to around 1080 and was elevated to a diocesan Sanctuary in 2002 by the Diocese of Acireale.
The festivities are preceded by a preparatory triduum of prayer and Eucharistic adoration. Friday evening marks the evocative unveiling of the statue accompanied by the singing of litanies, which officially opens the popular devotion. On the Sunday of the feast, morning masses are held, followed by the traditional auction in the square and, in the afternoon, the solemn procession of the Madonna's statue through the streets of the district, accompanied by a brass band and concluded with fireworks. The statue then remains displayed on the high altar until the octave, the following Sunday.
Beyond its religious dimension, the Feast of Maria SS. della Strada is a defining event for the entire Giarre community: the district's streets come alive with lights, stalls, and moments of conviviality that weave together the sacred and the folkloric, in that synthesis typical of Sicilian patronal feasts. For those visiting the area, it is also an opportunity to discover a territory suspended between the Ionian Sea and the slopes of Mount Etna.
The 2026 edition took on a very special meaning: it marked the opening of the Jubilee Year of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Strada, declared to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the church's elevation to a diocesan sanctuary (2002). The holy year will accompany the parish community and the faithful until 2027, with the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence.
Among the most solemn events of the year, the presence of the statue of Saint Isidore the Farmer, patron saint of Giarre, is expected at the Sanctuary. The sanctuary, of Norman origin dating back to 1080, will be a destination for pilgrimages throughout the jubilee year.
The opening of the Jubilee inaugurated a year of grace, faith, and pilgrimages with a rich program of events that continues beyond the month of May, until 2027.
The celebrations take place at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Strada, in the district of Santa Maria La Strada in Giarre (CT), postal code 95014, with a procession along the streets of the neighborhood.
By train: Giarre-Riposto station on the Ionian Messina-Catania-Syracuse line. By car: Giarre exit on the A18 Messina-Catania motorway. By plane: Catania-Fontanarossa airport, approximately 35 km away.
Participation in religious celebrations and the procession is free and open to all.
