The Miracle, the procession, and the illuminations of Paternopoli, in Irpinia
In the Municipality of Paternopoli, home to just over two thousand inhabitants nestled in the Calore Valley in the province of Avellino and the heart of Irpinia, the Feast of Maria SS. della Consolazione is no ordinary event: it is the defining act of an entire community. The bond with the Virgin of the Consolazione is so deeply rooted that even today, on the day of the anniversary, many locals refrain from work to dedicate themselves to prayer and participation in the rites.
The story begins in the parish church of San Nicola di Bari, which houses a 16th-century painting depicting the Madonna. On April 16, 1751, among the carpenters working on the building was Giovan Battista d'Amato, a talented man who had lost his speech and partial mobility five years earlier due to a stroke. While the priests were reciting the litanies before the Marian image, the man suddenly regained his voice and movement and intoned the Magnificat. Other episodes followed, including the healing of Gennaro Cubelli, who was suffering from advanced tuberculosis.
The Pontifical Tribunal recognized the miracle, and in 1776, the community of Paternopoli, through its elected representatives, made a solemn vow: to honor the Mother of the Consolazione by celebrating her forever, "until the end of the world." A vow that the town has never broken, not even during wars, famines, or earthquakes.
2026 was a special year: exactly 275 years since the First Miracle. The Municipality, the Parish of San Nicola di Bari, and the Festival Committee organized two days of celebrations on April 15 and 16, 2026, featuring the "275 Years of Grace" concert in the Mother Church, the arrival of the "Cittร di San Potito Ultra" Brass Band, a solemn mass presided over by H.E. Bishop Arturo Aiello of Avellino, an afternoon procession, and an evening light and video mapping show titled "Homage to Mary!".
Paternopoli boasts a centuries-old tradition of illuminations, which finds its highest expression during the Feast of the Consolazione: light arches along the main street, the band marching through the historic center, and families returning from out of town specifically for this occasion. In recent years, the classic repertoire has been joined by contemporary elements โ projections, video mapping, and LED lighting of the Marian statue โ without betraying the devotional spirit of the festival.
Located in inland Campania, about forty kilometers from the provincial capital of Avellino, Paternopoli is an agricultural village in the Calore Valley, a land of vineyards and rolling hills. Visitors arriving for the festival will find a town where religious and civil life are still closely intertwined: the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Consolazione is a pilgrimage destination not only for locals but for devotees from all over eastern Irpinia.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Maria SS. della Consolazione was marked by the 275th anniversary of the First Miracle, which occurred on April 16, 1751, in the church of San Nicola di Bari in Paternopoli. For the occasion, the Municipality, the Parish, and the Festival Committee created a two-day program, combining tradition, faith, and collective participation.
Alongside the usual rites โ the solemn mass, the band, the procession through the town streets โ the Irpinian community chose to recount its vow using new tools. "Homage to Mary!", the light and video mapping show curated by RGM Italy Events of Rome, illuminated the Marian statue with projections and LEDs, in continuity with the centuries-old tradition of Paternopoli's illuminations.
The extraordinary April celebrations were accompanied, as every year, by the liturgical feast on the Tuesday after Pentecost, fulfilling the solemn vow made by the community in 1776. In this case, too, the procession departs from the Mother Church at 5:00 PM and crosses the main streets of the town.
In addition to the April anniversary, the feast of Maria SS. della Consolazione is celebrated every year on the Tuesday after Pentecost: the procession moves from the Mother Church of San Nicola di Bari at 5:00 PM and travels through the main streets of Paternopoli.
