The Addolorata feast in San Paolo Bel Sito, between age-old devotion and illuminated doorways
In San Paolo Bel Sito, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Naples nestled between Nola and the Lauro Mountains in Campania, the first week of August has only one protagonist: the statue of Maria Santissima Addolorata, venerated for centuries by the local community. The official patron saint is Saint Sebastian, celebrated on January 20th, but it is the August Marian feast that truly mobilizes the town, the parish, and local associations. The San Paolo Eremita and SS. Epifania parish, whose origins date back to the late 16th century, preserves this devotion and marks the days of the festival with a seven-day preparation period, solemn celebrations, and a procession through the village streets.
The «Fontane di Luce» evening is what sets this festival apart from many other patronal feasts in the Naples area. The initiative recovers a custom documented as early as the 18th century, when the town streets were illuminated with torches and oil lamps during patronal celebrations: a simple yet evocative scenography that transformed the village into a path of small flames. Today, that memory is reinterpreted by the Pro Loco Terre del Bel Sito with light installations, water and light effects, and artistic displays in the courtyards and under the doorways of the historic center. The lights are not merely decorative: they explicitly evoke the figure of the Madonna Addolorata and symbolically open the festivities in her honor.
The mechanism of the event is as simple as it is effective: every year, families open their private doorways, entrance halls, and courtyards, which become stops on a walking tour through the heart of the old town. Each space is assigned a display, curated by local associations and Pro Loco groups invited from neighboring towns. Recent editions have featured participants from Avella, Cicciano, Lauro, Liveri, Mirabella Eclano, Pagani, Poggiomarino, and Sarno, making the «Fontane di Luce» a true showcase of Campanian folk traditions, including crafts, ancient trades, costumes, and rural heritage.
Along the route, the public encounters tastings of traditional dishes prepared by the associations: the rustic cuisine of the Neapolitan hinterland, produce from the Nola countryside, and traditional sweets. The walk is accompanied by musical moments, folk group performances, and displays reconstructing scenes of daily life from the past. The atmosphere is that of an authentic village festival, without large stages or tickets: you walk, watch, taste, and chat, while the village remains illuminated until late at night.
San Paolo Bel Sito is one of the smallest towns in the Nola area, but it preserves a compact historic center, agricultural courtyards, palaces, and churches that reveal their best charm on festival nights. Its position is strategic: it is just minutes from Nola and a short distance from Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, and the Vallo di Lauro. Those arriving for the «Fontane di Luce» can include the evening in an itinerary to discover the less touristy province of Naples, that of agricultural towns, sanctuaries, and festivals that still regulate the community calendar.
Because it is a festival born for the town and not for an external audience, and for this very reason, it remains genuine: it unites popular faith, historical memory, craftsmanship, and gastronomy in a single evening. And because walking among illuminated doorways on a Campanian August night is an experience that is hard to forget.
For the 2026 edition, the religious appointment is confirmed: the Diocese of Nola agenda lists for Saturday, August 1st, 2026, at 8:00 PM, the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Bishop Francesco in the San Paolo Eremita and SS. Epifania parish of San Paolo Bel Sito, on the occasion of the feast of Maria SS. Addolorata. The parish has also announced the seven-day preparation period that precedes the solemnity.
As per tradition, liturgical moments are accompanied by civil festivities organized by the Pro Loco Terre del Bel Sito and the Festival Committee, with the «Fontane di Luce» evening illuminating the doorways and courtyards of the historic center, displays by guest Pro Loco groups, tastings of traditional dishes, and the procession of the Addolorata statue through the town streets. The detailed 2026 program, with dates, times, and routes, is usually released closer to the event: as soon as it is available, it will be published on this page.
