About Fara in Sabina Carnival

The Fara in Sabina Carnival is one of the most popular carnival celebrations in central Italy. For an entire month, between January and February, the hamlets of Corese Terra, Passo Corese, Talocci, and Canneto come alive with parades of allegorical floats, masked groups, majorettes, food stalls, and entertainment for all ages. A widespread carnival that blends folk tradition, artisanal creativity, and community spirit, just a stone's throw from Rome in the heart of the Sabina Reatina.

The Fara in Sabina Carnival

In the municipality of Fara in Sabina, in the province of Rieti (Lazio), the Carnival is not just a single event but a long, widespread celebration that spans the entire municipal territory. For about a month, between late January and mid-February, the main hamlets take turns in a series of parades involving thousands of people, including residents and visitors from outside the area. It is considered one of the largest and most cherished carnivals in central Italy.

A widespread carnival across the hamlets

The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, true masterpieces born from months of work in local workshops. Each hamlet has its own event and identity: the Carnevale Corresano and Carnevale Coresino between Corese Terra and Passo Corese, the Carnevale Talocciano in Talocci, and the historic Children's Carnival (Carnevale dei Bambini) in Canneto, now in its 56th edition. The floats, accompanied by masked groups and majorettes, travel through the village streets in a triumph of color, music, and choreography.

The Carnevale Mortu and the tradition of U Poppo

The most evocative and ancient moment is the Carnevale Mortu, celebrated in Corese Terra at the end of the festivities. After the entertainment for children and the evening float parade, the community accompanies U Poppoโ€”the puppet symbolizing the Carnivalโ€”in a procession to the square, where the traditional ritual is renewed. It is a ritual rooted in the peasant culture of the Sabina region that renews the collective memory and local pride every year.

Gastronomy and festive atmosphere

Alongside the parades, there are plenty of food stalls where you can taste traditional carnival sweets and local dishes, as well as many entertainment initiatives designed for families and children. The event is organized by the Fara in Sabina Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco Fara in Sabina APS, with the support of numerous associations, volunteers, law enforcement, and civil protection.

A stone's throw from Rome

The location of Fara in Sabina, and particularly the hamlet of Passo Corese, makes this carnival easily accessible from the capital: an ideal day trip for those looking for an authentic, community-focused, and family-friendly celebration, immersed in the hilly landscape of the Sabina Reatina.
