A month of allegorical floats, masks, and tradition across the hamlets of the Sabina Reatina
In the municipality of Fara in Sabina, in the province of Rieti (Lazio), the Carnival is not just a single event but a long, widespread celebration that spans the entire municipal territory. For about a month, between late January and mid-February, the main hamlets take turns in a series of parades involving thousands of people, including residents and visitors from outside the area. It is considered one of the largest and most cherished carnivals in central Italy.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, true masterpieces born from months of work in local workshops. Each hamlet has its own event and identity: the Carnevale Corresano and Carnevale Coresino between Corese Terra and Passo Corese, the Carnevale Talocciano in Talocci, and the historic Children's Carnival (Carnevale dei Bambini) in Canneto, now in its 56th edition. The floats, accompanied by masked groups and majorettes, travel through the village streets in a triumph of color, music, and choreography.
The most evocative and ancient moment is the Carnevale Mortu, celebrated in Corese Terra at the end of the festivities. After the entertainment for children and the evening float parade, the community accompanies U Poppoโthe puppet symbolizing the Carnivalโin a procession to the square, where the traditional ritual is renewed. It is a ritual rooted in the peasant culture of the Sabina region that renews the collective memory and local pride every year.
Alongside the parades, there are plenty of food stalls where you can taste traditional carnival sweets and local dishes, as well as many entertainment initiatives designed for families and children. The event is organized by the Fara in Sabina Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco Fara in Sabina APS, with the support of numerous associations, volunteers, law enforcement, and civil protection.
The location of Fara in Sabina, and particularly the hamlet of Passo Corese, makes this carnival easily accessible from the capital: an ideal day trip for those looking for an authentic, community-focused, and family-friendly celebration, immersed in the hilly landscape of the Sabina Reatina.
The 2026 edition enlivened the Fara in Sabina area for nearly a month, with five major events passing the baton between the hamlets. A program that combined parades of allegorical floats created in local workshops, entertainment for children, and traditional food stalls, closing in triumph with the historic Carnevale Mortu.
Fara in Sabina is located in the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. The hamlet of Passo Corese is well connected to Rome via the FL1 railway line (Fara Sabina-Montelibretti station) and the A1 motorway, Fiano Romano exit. The other hamlets can be reached by car via local roads.
All parades and events are free to attend. Food stalls offer traditional dishes and sweets at affordable prices.
Check the Municipality and Pro Loco channels for schedules and any program updates. Parades are held in the early afternoon; the Carnevale Mortu also includes an evening parade.
