The multi-genre contemporary and experimental music festival of the Itria Valley
Experimenta is one of the longest-running and most original festivals on the Apulian music scene: a multi-genre festival dedicated to contemporary music, experimentation, and the cross-pollination of artistic languages. Each year, the event travels through various locations in the province of Bari, concluding in the place where it was born: Alberobello, among the famous trulli of the town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The artistic program blends seemingly distant genres—world music, avant-garde jazz, electronica, classical music, singer-songwriter tracks, and spoken word—into a cultural project that prioritizes research, active listening, and the meeting of different cultures.
Founded in 1999 and organized by the A/Herostrato cooperative, Experimenta has built a distinct identity over time, hosting international artists such as Patti Smith, Calexico, Television, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, and Giovanni Sollima. This journey has made the festival a reference point for those seeking bold, non-mainstream musical programming in Puglia.
The festival follows an itinerant structure: the stages touch various towns in the province of Bari—including Bari, Bitonto, and Sannicandro di Bari, with concerts also held in the evocative Norman-Swabian Castle—before the grand finale in Alberobello. Here, concerts take place in charming locations such as the Rione Aia Piccola and the gardens of Villa Donnaloja, in the heart of the historic trulli district.
The festival's finale carries strong symbolic value: Alberobello, in Puglia, is world-famous for its trulli, the typical dry-stone buildings with conical roofs. Attending an Experimenta concert among the narrow streets of the historic center or in the town's historic gardens means combining a musical experience with one of Southern Italy's most iconic landscapes, in a setting that enhances both sound research and the cultural heritage of the Itria Valley.
The grand finale of the 27th edition of Experimenta was held in Alberobello, in the province of Bari, from June 11 to 13, 2026. The three evenings took place in the evocative Rione Aia Piccola, in Largo Menotti, with a double-concert format: two performances each evening, at 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM. The edition was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Alberobello's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Before concluding among the trulli, the festival visited other locations in Puglia, including Bari, Bitonto, and Sannicandro di Bari.
Alberobello can be reached by car via the SS172 dei Trulli road. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est (Bari-Taranto line). The nearest airport is the Karol Wojtyła Airport in Bari-Palese, approximately 60 km away.
Experimenta concerts in Alberobello are free to attend and generally take place in the evening. On nights with double concerts, the performances are scheduled around 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM.
