On June 21st, live music brings the Salone Borbonico to life, featuring tammorre and strings
On June 21st, the summer solstice, all of Europe celebrates European Music Day: an occasion created to bring sounds out of concert halls and back into squares, courtyards, and the places of everyday life. San Nicola la Strada, a town in the Province of Caserta, Campania, also joins the celebration with an evening of live music open to everyone, as part of the cultural events program promoted by the Municipality.
The edition hosted in the Salone Borbonico has a distinct character: rather than a scattered program, it features a single, carefully curated free concert designed for an audience of all ages. This choice aligns with the spirit of the event, which prioritizes the direct connection between musicians and listeners over spectacle.
The concert takes place in the Salone Borbonico, a spacious hall of approximately five hundred square meters located within the Bourbon complex of the Real Convitto di Santa Maria delle Grazie, in the town's historic center, just steps from Piazza Municipio. The building also houses the Museum of Peasant Civilization and is regularly used for conferences, temporary exhibitions, and performances: an intimate acoustic space that brings the audience closer to the performers, making it particularly well-suited for chamber music and acoustic ensembles.
The location is no coincidence. San Nicola la Strada grew in the shadow of the nearby Royal Palace of Caserta and retains traces of the Bourbon era in its urban fabric: bringing Music Day to these spaces also means reintroducing the public to architectural heritage that is rarely visited throughout the rest of the year.
The concert is produced by the Accademia Musicale Città di Caserta - Yamaha Music School, a school with branches in Caserta and San Nicola la Strada specializing in musical education for children and teenagers. Director Mena Santacroce has described the event as an immersive, highly engaging, and rhythmic concert, conceived to introduce younger audiences to live music and move listeners of all ages.
The format alternates between two sound worlds:
This alternation serves an clear educational purpose: it allows the listener, especially the younger audience, to grasp in a single evening how diverse—and yet how compatible—different forms of musical organization can be.
Few musical events are truly built around children without sacrificing the quality of the performance. Here, the choice of an 6:00 PM start time and the structure of the program make the experience accessible even for the youngest, while free admission, as per the tradition of European Music Day, removes all barriers to entry.
For families in the Caserta area, it is a double opportunity: a high-quality concert at no cost and the chance to introduce children to instruments—tammorra, double bass, violin, piano—that are rarely encountered up close.
The Municipality of San Nicola la Strada includes Music Day in an annual program that features festivals, summer initiatives, and events linked to civil and religious holidays. Collaboration with local educational institutions, primarily the Accademia Musicale Città di Caserta - Yamaha Music School, is a cornerstone of this programming: students and teachers from local music schools find a real stage in the Salone Borbonico, performing before a real audience.
Visitors from outside the area can easily combine the evening with a visit to the Royal Palace of Caserta and its park, just a few minutes away by car, or the Belvedere of San Leucio: San Nicola la Strada is effectively adjacent to the provincial capital and is well-served by the main road networks of Campania.
For the 2026 European Music Day, the Municipality of San Nicola la Strada chose a unique and curated event: Sunday, June 21st, at 6:00 PM, in the Salone Borbonico, with completely free admission.
The evening was entrusted to the Accademia Musicale Città di Caserta - Yamaha Music School, which created a concert specifically designed for children, teenagers, and adults. Director Mena Santacroce presented it as an immersive, highly engaging, and rhythmic concert, capable of introducing younger audiences to live music and moving listeners of all ages.
The program alternated between Southern Italian folk music, with tammorre, guitar, vocals, and double bass, and classical chamber music for piano and violins: a choice that, in just one hour of listening, allowed the audience to experience two very different languages and grasp their common rhythmic roots.
The initiative is part of the cultural events program that the Municipality promotes throughout the year and confirms the Salone Borbonico as the main performance space in the historic center of San Nicola, in the Province of Caserta.
