Walking tours and workshops in the Roman city of Libarna in Serravalle Scrivia
The European Archaeology Days (JEA) are a Europe-wide initiative that invites the public every June to discover the work of archaeologists up close. In Serravalle Scrivia, in the Province of Alessandria, the event takes place at the Libarna archaeological site, one of the most significant Roman urban centers in Piedmont, which developed along the Via Postumia connecting Genoa to Aquileia.
The highlight of the event is the archaeological walk through the monumental remains of the ancient city: the amphitheater, the theater, residential quarters, and ancient roads reveal the daily life of Libarna between the 1st century BC and the late antique period. The tours, led by the site's scientific directors, offer a deep dive into Roman urban planning and construction techniques, as well as the latest findings from ongoing excavations.
The Days also serve as a forum for discussing the present and future of the site. The talk "Libarna: new perspectives for research and promotion" showcases the projects carried out by the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Piedmont for the protection, study, and dissemination of heritage, blending archaeological research, educational activities, and new technologies applied to cultural heritage.
A significant part of the program is dedicated to younger visitors: educational workshops for children and families offer playful and didactic activities designed to make history and archaeology engaging. It is an experience that combines fun and learning, perfect for a cultural outing among the stones of ancient Libarna.
The Libarna archaeological site, managed as part of the Savoy Royal Residences of the Municipality of Serravalle Scrivia, is brought to life during the warmer months by a rich calendar of events, including the "In the Time of the Gods" series. The European Archaeology Days are one of the most anticipated moments, successfully highlighting the historical identity of the territory and introducing a wide audience to an important chapter of the Piedmont Region.
The 2026 edition took place on Saturday, June 13, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, as part of the European Archaeology Days (June 12-14, 2026). The program featured the talk "Libarna: new perspectives for research and promotion," a guided archaeological walk through the remains of the Roman city, and educational workshops for families. Speakers included Valentina Barberis (Director of the Libarna archaeological site) and Valentina Faudino (Educational Services of the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Piedmont), coordinated by Elisa Lanza.
The Libarna archaeological site is located in Serravalle Scrivia (AL), easily accessible by car via the A7 Milan-Genoa motorway (Serravalle Scrivia exit) or by train to the Serravalle Scrivia station. The site is located a short distance from the town center.
Admission to the archaeological site is free. During the European Archaeology Days, activities (walks and workshops) take place in the afternoon; it is recommended to check the schedule and participation details on the official channels.
